62 Drivetrain Install Questions ....

I am planning to use the 292 out of the 63 as a temporary powerplant.

I'll be either using a PG or 700r4.....prefer the 700.

Should I just fab up some adapter mounts off of the stock welded mounts, or make up some new side mounts ?

Does the OG bellhousing crossmember have to be cutout to allow an Auto ?

And last, PG versus 4speed driveline lengths ??

if you are to run an a/t then one should utilize side mounts as you have eliminated the mounting at the bell housing. 3 point mounting.. you may have a tough time installing the trans with that cross member in there and if you do get it in there it will be impossilble to ever remove it without taking the engine out to and will still be a wrestle job
there are 2 different lengths of p/glide and both are shorter than a 700r4. a 200r4 is close to the same length as the longer p/g. the rear spline from the p/g to the others will be different

Thats what I figured.

I wanted to keep this chassis og, but the frame swap wont be for a while....so, modifications will need to be done.

the eng compartment will be wide open- just cut the rivets for the cross member, then you can always put it back in if ever needed.

I have a 62 stepside and have a question to add to this...

can the original 1962 3 speed tranny with original bellhousing clutch with slave cylinder all be hooked up to lets say a 283 and then just attach the side motor mounts for a 283 to the frame? Or a 292 for that matter? The original 235 just dont cut it...

No..... Unlike the 63 and later chassis', the crossmember is welded.

you will need a orig 283 bell housing if you want to maintain the orig style hydr clutch. but after and inc 63 any I6 or v8 cast iron bellhousing will work but you will have to apply a hydr setup for the drivers side

I would definitely go with the 700R4, even though you will have to have the driveshaft shortened. Having that done really is not expensive. Those OEM 292 motor mount brackets will have to either be shortened, or add a spacer on top of the frame, as the '60-'62 frames are shorter in height than the '63+ frames. I would definitely remove the bellhousing crossmember.

Of course a rear trans mount for an auto trans in a '60-'62 will need to be fabricated. There are holes in the X-member where the original style mounted.

If I can get a good deal for a set of 292 perches from a member here .. otherwise I'm just gonna fab my own set as well as the Xmember.
