Drive Shaft Questions

Im replacing the old powerglide with a 700r4. will i need to shorten the drive shaft in order to fit the new tranny??

I'm waiting on my torque converter to do this same swap. Yes you will have to shorten your driveshaft or find one that's the correct length. I'm under the impression that one from a mid 80's gm truck will work. There are some threads here on this if you do some searching and reading. Hope this helps.

If your truck is lwb I'm not sure.

One or two piece shaft? If you're planning on putting any kind of horsepower in front of the tiny two piece it may be a good time to think about getting a one piece built or find one close and have it cut down (cost me 70 bucks cash to have it shortened and balanced.

Where did you get it done for $70? I paid $350 to have my 2 piece shortened and balanced with new U joints.

local driveline shop, London Driveline. They mainly do large trucks and pto's.
Maybe because I have a one piece shaft it's a little easier to balance.
I just moved the engine back to the rear mount holes so I had to have the shaft shortened by 3".

I have put 700r4 trannys in two Swb trucks and have lucked out and found 54" long (u joint to u joint) one piece drive shafts out of late 80's trucks for $50 and $65 (!)

i swapped my th350 for a 700r4 and i had to get a new drive shaft one because mine was vibrating very bad and two the old one was too long. I took mine out last week because I am going to need a two piece for the bags its free to anyone willing to pick it up...its off a 72 short bed
