Show me some steering wheels please
Good morning!
I'm in need of a steering wheel and whatever adapter i may require. I have an ididit tilt column. I will be checking out another column drop as this one puts my column too low, it's probably cause my seat puts me a little higher? As it is right now, the end of my column sticks through the firewall about an inch. I do have another thread on column advice. This thread asks about steering wheels, looks, diameters, and whatever opinions you may offer ; ) Dne' Posted via Mobile Device Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Show me some steering wheels please
This may not help much but here goes. I am putting a 48 truck wheel on my 82 Caddy column. 55-57 trucks had a relatively flat wheel, in 58 and 59 I think they changed the column length and went to a dished wheel. If you look in my build thread around post 614 there are photos that show the differences. I needed a flat wheel, found that just about any GM truck or auto from 46 to 57 would work, I just found the 48 first.
On yours I would look at raising the column, check the seat height with the door on so you are comfortable with the relationship to the window opening. I placed my seats so my arm rest comfortably on the window sill and I can see out over the hood.

Re: Show me some steering wheels please
With the original seat and column, the front of my seat measures 13 inches from the floor, and the top edge of the column is level with the top of the numbers on the speedometer, as best that I can measure. It looks from your pic that you have a combination of higher seat and lower column. I think would look at modifying the column drop first thing since you already said you didn't want to modify the seat mounts. I don't blame you for not wanting to change the seat mount as I always hate to go back and change something after I think I have it finished. It's not as much fun the second time, LOL. The recessed steering wheel started in 57 BTW.

Re: Show me some steering wheels please
i would change your column drop to bring it closer to the dash.
i have long legs and raised my seats an inch above stock height to get more leg room. i also kept the column as close to the dash as possible, so close that when everything went together i had to grind the point off the dash bezel i typically drive with the tilt in the straight position which makes the prndl hard to see but a shorter driver (as if i'd let anyone else drive it) could always tilt the column down. the column and wheel are from an 86 chevy astro/gmc safari van, same wheel as the s-10 trucks.

The top two (the red and white wheel) is my truck. the wheel is from a friends 62 impalla. the other red and white one is a stock wheel, and the others are obviously billet. Since i am using a GM wheel and have a stock collum it needed no adapters. It's a great wheel, It's a little big, and i will swap it out down the road. but then i could probably just cut back on the beer...NOT Aftermarket wheels have come a long way in terms of appearance, and I would have bought one but this was a good price. The size of the stock 50's and 60's wheels gets to you after awhile, at least it does me. my 55' wagon has a stock wheel but it has more room in it. If my sons are with me I have to be careful or I'll elbow them on a right hand turn. In the end you need something you can drive and fits the vibe of your vehicle. |

Had a steering wheel that fit!
Just taking a break from the truck. I called Jeff at Scottshotrods and ordered their drop, min is 1.5", the kit as I understand includes a couple other levels. I think closer to the bottom of the dash will look best. I was confused about what steering wheels fit this ididit column. Jeff told me any earlier models wheels will fit too! I had my steering wheel from a 72 impala that I didnt know would bolt right up! ; ). Now when I get the steering drop, I'll have a steering wheel, not the prettiest but functional! At least I don't have ask Gary for money for a steering at this time
Dne' Just ran out to locate this steering wheel, found it within 5 minutes! Thats a record for finding something in my garage.! I appreciate yalls comments and treasure the help caused I'd be lost without help! ; ) Posted via Mobile Device Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Show me some steering wheels please
ididit has this column mount that might work
you'll have to make an angle bracket to mount it

Re: Show me some steering wheels please
If that is a late model GM truck seat you should be able to section the base (s) and lower it rather easily.
This is the wheel that is in my 71 GMC It's a Nardi wood wheel from Italy that was probably in a Mazda Miata in Singapore originally. I bought it on Ebay used as they sell for around 300 new. It takes a special adapter kit that is available on Ebay. I didn't notice that it was almost upside down when I took the photo. It is extremely comfortable on the hands when you drive too. |

Re: Show me some steering wheels please
custom classic trucks magazine, august 2012 issue has an article on shrinking the diameter of a stock wheel down
i posted a link to the article on their web site. they used an eastwoods steering wheel repair kit the article is pretty in depth for those that want a stock, but smaller wheel those stock 57 steering wheels that parkwood and meter swinger posted are pretty sweet shrinking them an inch and a half would make them sweeter yet i may have to look for a stock 57 wheel for truk

Also some threads over on the HAMB board about shrinking and swaping steering wheel rims to different centers.
