removing cab
Hello all,
I am planning on removing my cab pretty soon, couple questions. (1) I would like to leave the complete cab intact as I remove it since it is pretty much done as far as body work. Has anyone done this before. (2) My thoughts were to remove the hood place one strap from the rad support to my chain hoist, and 2 straps thru the door openings with the doors slightly opended. Does this sound logical? (3) What is the est weight of a complete cab doors, fenders, glass, ect. Thanks in advance |

Re: removing cab
here is how I did mine, balanced out pretty good just placing the lift arms on the cab supports under the cab.

Re: removing cab
Well I have a four post lift, I was trying to fig out how to use it to lift the cab, but I believe that I will be better off using my overhead crane. If I had a 2 post id be set. Glad to see that I dont have to seperate the front clip tho. Thanks...
Any other thoughts on the strapping method I posted earlier |

Re: removing cab
You could remove the hood and hinges and bolt in something to lift from there and the back side of the cab, that would probably be the easiest.

Re: removing cab
Hey great Idea. I will look to see how strong that section would be. I have plenty of steel laying around.
Thanks! |

Re: removing cab
I called 5 buddies over and between the 6 of us, we lifted my '66 cab off and set it down in garage.

Re: removing cab
Huh, I always unbolt the front clip and remove separately with my cherry picker and four straps. Then do the cab. I never even thought of doing the cab and front clip all in one. Methinks its too heavy for my hoist casters anyway. Cool idea though.

Re: removing cab
I used 3 buddies and myself, cab was pretty bare- no doors, seat. IMO, pull the front cap separate.

Re: removing cab
most rad supports have some rust, I wouldn't attach and lift there.
without the front clip, just the cab, you can lift with a strap, OR, you can use a 4x4 wood post run through the door openings. With a wood post, you can even lift by placing an engine hoist UNDER the center of the post. thats how I lift mine. The center of gravity is forward towards the firewall. there are some pics on other threads here of different ways to lift and seperate. Cab with no doors or glass is about 300 lb.

Re: removing cab
THanks for all the replies.
I picked it up off the frame Wed afternoon, I used a 8" wide cargo strap ran thur the windows with the doors closed. I used abunch of blankets to protect the drip rails, and then one strap down to the radiator support to help balance it. It did fine, may have bent the drip rail ever so slightly. I will probably remove the cab one more time to blast the frame, I wanted to place it there now so I could fab the cab mounts and such. For future reference all I removed was the hood and seat. I would guess the weight at 900lb. Thanks again |
