My Hood Flew Up on the HWY WTF? Almost crashed
I guess I didn't slam the hood hard enough....Was doing about 45MPH and the hood on my truck flew all the way up. I just kept my eye on the line on the side of the road and brought it to a stop as fast as I could. All of the wind resistance Sprung the hinges a little. Freaked me out
I tested it when I got home and lightly slammed the hood- i then pulled up on it and the hood went all of the way up. Now I am thinking I need a safety chain/ cable or something to keep this from happening again. Usually there is some sort of hood safety latch on vehicles that needs to be pressed FWD once the main latch is pulled? Any Advice? |

Re: My Hood Flew Up on the HWY WTF? Almost crashed
I'm glad you're okay. My dad had that happen in a 58 Metropolitan when I was a kid. It was very scary. Destroyed the hood and broke the windshield. The event is one of the reasons I’ve chained my hoods closed ever since I started driving in the 1960’s.
Post #3 & 7 on the following thread shows how my 1960 is secured along with a couple of other ideas: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...ight=hood+lock

Where is the factory safety latch, my hood used to pop open all the time but always got caught by the safety latch.

I had a 75 F@*D that did the same when I was about 18, kind of an "all gone" feeling...
I've also found that if you just drive backwards, it won't happen. Sure, people look at you funny, but hey "SAFETY FIRST"

Re: My Hood Flew Up on the HWY WTF? Almost crashed
That sucks. I was test driving a 94 Ford Mustang once that I was thinking of buying and ON THE TEST DRIVE the hood flew open. Screwed up the hood, broke the windshield, broke the cowl out and dented the roof of the car up too!! All because the owner had put in a battery that was too tall and the hood wouldn't latch securely. Odd that that would happen to a 66 though.

I'm glad you're okay
I've had this happen also...2 times in fact.....when I was a teenager. I would say, you may need to adjust your hood latch to achieve a more positive engagement.

I would check your latch spring. I had one that was broken and the hood would pop open quite often..
Big spring in center keeps the latch closed around the striker.

Re: My Hood Flew Up on the HWY WTF? Almost crashed
The long spring on the left of the picture was broken on mine, my safety latch wouldn't work until I replaced it

Re: My Hood Flew Up on the HWY WTF? Almost crashed
yikes, glad ur ok.
I have never seen a heavy steel old car hood fly up like that; we did have it happen in a little Toyota MR2 Turbo. That was a light CF hood on hood pins, and one came loose.
