Disc Conversion, HELP

Switching my 64 front drums to disc. Have everything installed except the tie rods. I e-mailed Aaron at CPP to ensure I order the correct adapter sleeves to mate the old tie rods.

I have the 64 outter that I am using as the new inner. I have a new 71 outter that I am connecting to the spindle. Problem is, the total length before was about 19"...now its 16.5. I have a crazy toe in (I think is what its referred to, where both wheels are significantly turned inward at the front of the wheel)

Furthermore, I cannot simply adjust the sleeves because the tie rods are barely threaded at all...meaning any less portion of the tie rod in the sleeve and it would come out.

Any ideas? Am I missing something?

Re: Disc Conversion, HELP

Sounds like you have the tie rods in the correct orientation,... but your CPP adapter sleeve is too short,... or you need a longer inner tie rod.

I have this exact converion on my '69 using tie rod adapter sleeves from Perfomance Online.
I had no issues at all.

I looked up stock tie rod sleeves and they are listed as either:
60-64
65-70
So they must be different length tie rods.

Can you post some pics of your set up?

63-70 conversion drop spindles would have eliminated all these issues,... but its too late for that.
I learned this myself,... the hard way.

Re: Disc Conversion, HELP

I looked at tie rod sizes on CPP, looks like the 69 outter tie rod is the same dimensions as the 64, just longer...maybe that is a solution?

Image above is a full left turn...notice there is not much turn...other wheel is hitting the bump stop.

Below is a little more self-explanitory...again with a 71 outter on the outside, and a 64 outter on the inside.

Re: Disc Conversion, HELP

I think I would try the 65-70 outer in the INNER location.
I just hope the taper matches the bore of the center link.
It's worth a try.

Re: Disc Conversion, HELP

Looks like you have the conversion spindles from CPP, right? I just put CPP drop spindles on my truck, and I went to orielley's and just ordered up replacement tie rod ends for my truck's year, 66. They went on fine in the correct length.

I am certain that the drop spindles that I have are designed to accept the older style tie rods (including length), because they're made specifically for our conversion application. If you're running the same thing, try to just buy the tie rod ends for the year your truck is.

His truck is a '64.
I believe the 60-64 trucks had a shorter tie rod and a longer connector sleeve than the 65-66 trucks.
I think he's going to have to use 65-66 tie rods (actually 65-70) to make them work with the shorter CPP converion sleeve.

Re: Disc Conversion, HELP

Ok, I'll stand corrected. I thought all of the 64-66 parts were the same.

I hope you get it sorted out.
