Stay stock or swap out for v8

Hey all. I'd like your opinions please. My 67 sb stepside has factory pwr steering, brakes , and air, 4 speed 4x4 with a 292. I'm planning on keeping it from now on but don't know if it makes sense to swap out the 6 banger for this sweet little camaro 350 I have or to keep it all original. If I swap it', i plan to hang on to all the original parts just in case someday I decide to sell it after all. Am I nuts for wanting to put the v8 in this truck? I just am partial to the rumble of a smallblock. What's your thoughts? Will the 350 bolt up to the factory 4-speed?

My 2 cents.....keep the 292 (maybe even tweak the 292 some).

I'd say keep the 292. Its rare to find an early 6 cyl truck with these options intact and working much less a 4x4. Yes a swap is reversable but most never are. Then when the little bits go missing.....

Welcome! No, maybe your not nuts but, I wouldn't mind getting my hands on a well equipped 292 4x4 truck.

ok, ok, I'll be first to spout sacrilege... V8! But I'd keep it period/original looking and so on. Nothing too gucci or it could easily kill the look and nostalgia of the cool ol 4x4 stepper.

If it was a 250 manual brakes steering no AC, 3 ott, 2wd truck, I would say swap it, like I plan to do with a 454, but I would leave a 292 power brake steering ac 4x4 alone

If you can do a good clean uncobaled swap I would put in a small block V-8. I worked with 292,s for years & they are tough & have good torque, but there is nothing like the smoothness, high reveing, & sound of a v-8. When the secondaries of the Q-jet open its a thrill all its own.

Sounds like you are describing my truck!
I have this argument with myself all the time. I vote keep the 6 unless you really need a power upgrade and assuming the original combo is healthy.

Leave the six!!! I would love to get my paws on a truck like that. Want more power? Throw a turbo on it. What's cool about a small block? Everyone has one.

Better idea. You give me your cross member/mounts/brackets and I will give you all the v8 parts for free.

sounds like your combination is an uncommon one especially with a/c, it might be more trouble than its worth just trying to remove the rear engine crossmember, some people cut it in half to remove it

if i was you id do some things to the 292 but depends on wether or not you want the stock look, iv seen some pretty cool stuff on the I6 thread like offenhuser manifold, turbos, dual single carbs etc

lus if yu do a v8 swap and keep all the stuff you take off to convert back to original some you have to find a place to put it where you wont be tripping over it all the time and wil likely just end up cluttering your shop, just my 2 cents though its your truck

I also say keep the 292 but why not do a poll.

Looks like the 292 is the favorite. Also that's a nice set of options.

another thing i just realized and im not trying to question the originality of you truck, but yu said your truck is a 67 and it has factory power steering? from what i understand and read on this site power steering wasnt introduced until 68 year, unless 4 wheel drives had it or this is a late late 67 where it recieved the new style 68 frame maybe?

maybe someone with more knowledge can chime in on this

Most power steer 1967s had ram style systems like a corvette.

IMHO...keep that big, strong, bullet-proof 6-banger!
Theres plenty of go fast stuff you can add too!
