A/c ?????

Is it easier to install a classic air a/c system on a non a/c cab or just swap cabs that came with factory a/c? I have a 69 without and was thinking about putting a 70 cab with. a/c on.

Re: A/c ?????

I have a Vintage System and I am using a non ac cab (i have an ac cab also). My kit is not a year specific application, so I wanted a "clean slate" so-to-speak to have the ability to use different (billet aluminim) vents and not be stuck with the stock round balls. Just my .02 cents.

Re: A/c ?????

If you have a good non-a/c cab and want to install factory a/c it is not that hard to do. Measure twice, cut once.

Ha so true! sounds good. Ok the reason why i ask is, don't the vintage air systems price around $1200? Because i can pick this truck up for the same price running with a/c. So swap the cabs and i have a sbc 400 to work with.

Re: A/c ?????

That's all true, but if the system is apart or has not been charged in a long time you could be replacing the compressor condensor and dryer, which isn't cheap either (ad doesn't say if the air works.)

The ad does not say if the A/C works or not....which means it doesn't. If it did the guy would be bragging about it in the ad, cause you NEED it in Vegas.

That looks like a big-block to me. Shame to cut that one up. But new parts and a whole vehicle are 2 different things. For the new parts you get.....new parts. If you buy a used truck, you get old stuff. If you buy the old, you will have to fix a broken control lever, probably a mode door, new relay, and a new inside hose kit. Not to mention that you will need sb brackets, probably new hoses, compressor, dryer, expansion valve.

So true and yes it is a bbc! Talked to the guy more and all he really knows that it's original and sometimes the a/c works and sometimes it doesn't. Thanks for all the insight but i think my best bet is to buy a new a/c system! So my question now is which system works the best?

Re: A/c ?????

I installed an Old Air kit in my truck. Was simple and blows nice and cold all day long. I would go that route rather then trying to piece together an original simply because as stated previously trying to replace any and all components that are bad would not only be frustrating but will probably cost you more then an aftermarket kit in the long run. Not to mention you either get to stick with R12 and pay a ton for the charge or fork out more money again to update to the R134a. . Just my two cents. hope that helps

Re: A/c ?????

Oh BTW i recommend doing the electronic controls rather then the cable operated unit. reason for this is as follows.

1) check valves tend not to want to shut off completely after time, so your system wont get as cool as it can.

2)the cables tend to tighten up over the years and make it more of a pain "not a big deal just saying"

3) its either hot or cold. There's a bit of adjustment on the heat but on the AC the micro switch is either on or its off. So cold or not.

reason i like electronic controls is as follows:
Valve is electric and works every time from my experience with it.

and you have a full range of adjustment of temp. much better options for keeping the cab comfy.

I'm also looking at the vintage air and classic auto kits. Have heard nothing but great reviews from both.
