Electric Fan Options

I have had it on my list to add an electric fan for some time and remove the stock fan. Some people say it helps with horse power, others say it cools better. Whatever the reason I need a better way to cool things down.

I do not have a shroud right now. I know my cooling suffers from this detail.

After researching myself and being told by others to just zip tie an electric fan on it, I'm torn on the best option.

Will zip tie an electric fan on it work ok with this?

At 16" its going to get close to that 80% coverage. And its cheep.

Ford Taurus stock fans of "legend" are another option. Has a smaller fan but a built in shroud that gives it close to 80% coverage as well.

Another option I have contemplated was leaving the hand chopper blades of doom and putting in a shroud.

I have also seem people mod an electric fan into the shroud. This cost the most at near $200.

Considering the aftermarket temp gauge I have is correct I run about 160 (in +80F) and up to 180 (in +95F)
Hauling things will make it runaway and overheat. I had to cut it off when helping a friend move on a 101F day.

Cooling is key, but keeping in the $100 range is desired. Any opinions of what would be best? Thank you, as always for any input. You guys rock.

I understand the want to stay "cheep" on the cost but when you over heat and have to go into repairs the fans will have been a place you would not want to go cheep on. I have the 2 fan kit from Old air products. Its almost $300 but its hard to beat. Bolts into the stock shroud mounts and 2 wires to the battery and one into the fuse block.

I would never do a zip-tie fan. The torque when it starts has to be hard on the radiator fins.

For a basically stock truck, I would just get a shroud. To do a decent electric fan you will have to upgrade your alternator. If I was going to do an electric, I would do a dual setup and stage them so that you only run 1 unless it gets really hot. That will cut down on amp draw. If you search the catalogs at the parts stores you can find water temperature switches that will come on at varied temperatures.

I was at the wrecking yard a few weeks ago and picked up a ford windstar dual fan assembly. It seems to fit very well and will be easy to make brackets. The best part was it super cheap ($25). I am doing an LS swap so the dual fans will be computer controlled. You could easily set it up with a switch to turn on the second fan when it gets hot out or you are towing.

I have heard of buying a replacement stock fan assembly for a chevy hhr. They are about $50 from Rockauto and come with a shroud and i beleive all the sensors are built in. Iread about it on another forum for cooler large motors in small bays and they allegedly work great. I know they at least keep my hhr cool. They are also two speed fans.
