Question GMC V-6 question.

I have been looking for a 67-72 1 ton dump for about a year now. A guy at my work has one for sale but it has one problem. It is a GMC V-6. I like the GMC part but in all my years of messing with these trucks I have never owned one with a V-6. I would want to put a small block(or big block) in it and I know it is just a simple swap but what about the engine location. It is a factory dump with a PTO on the 4-speed. What about engine location (V-6 vs. small block) and the bell housing. I am slobbering to buy this truck! Thanks

That V-6 is a work horse. About a 7 mpg work horse That thing has a lot of torque!

I would leave that V6 in that dump truck. That is about as close to the original intention of GMC for the purpose of that motor. I owned a 63 GMC with a 305 V6 and I swear that thing would pull anything. Mountains of torque.

With the exception of obtaining parts, the V-6 would be ideal.
As for location and bellhousing...I'm not sure, but I think the bellhousing issue was just covered on here recently.

I run a GMC305V6 and like it. You can buy most common parts at NAPA. Check this link to a 305V6 message board. There are people there who can answer your questions.

Give it a try before you switch.

I got a '69 GMC 3500 with a 305 V-6 set up exactly like the one you are looking at.............Aftermarket box and dump on it though. I would keep the V-6.........Alittle thirsty but will make a V-8 look like a go cart engine on a good load!!!!!!!!!!!

I love mine, I don't have it on the road because I can't afford the insurance...........but I don't really need it on the road because I use it on our farm.............Was probably one of my best buys at $750!
