how to tell if 235 is mechanical or hydraulic?

Guys sorry if this is a stupid question but im about to pull my 235 from the 62 C10 and the rebuilder is asking if its hydraulic or mechanical. He tells me rebuilding the mechanical head is more work/problematic than hydraulic. Do you agree to this and how do i tell which type I have? I seem to recall someone in the past telling me it has solid (mechanical) lifters but Im not sure...

THanks,
Mark

Re: how to tell if 235 is mechanical or hydraulic?

Pull the valve cover and find a valve that is closed. Using a pry bar find a good anchor under a neighboring rocker arm and apply firm steady downward pressure on the push rod side of the closed valve. It may take a little bit but a hydraulic lifter will begin to collapse without the running engine oil pressure and give some noticeable slop on the push rod. Solid lifters will not produce this effect.

Re: how to tell if 235 is mechanical or hydraulic?

Generally after 1957 they were all hydraulic, Find a different rebuilder, if he is just doing the guides, seats, grinding valves there is no difference to him. The difference is only in the lash adjustment when installing the head back on the block. If he is installing the head, he should know how to tell the difference.
Pull the side cover off and look.
