Sloppy Tilt Column Repair
I'm in the middle of tightening the loose bolts in the steering column as detailed by Captkaos in his "Fixing a Sloppy GM Tilt Column" thread. I just got the bolts tightened and will start putting it back together tomorrow.
I found a small ball bearing laying on the seat as I was cleaning up for the day. My first thought was that a ball had fallen out of the upper bearing cage. I checked the cage, and all the balls are still in place. I have no idea where that ball came from. Does anyone have a clue where the mystery ball may have come from? Thanks for any suggestions, Les |

Out of the signal switch? a detent ball of some sort...I have a few of these columns apart and the upper bearing race would be my guess, unless the bearing was replaced before and it was left behind?

Uh, oh.....I believe that ball bearing goes in the cage that is right above the upper stub (# 46 in picture). The bad news is you have to take it all apart to stuff it back in the cage. The image is a G-van Saginaw column but still pretty much the typical Saginaw column dealeo in all GMs of the era.
 Another view….Remember this sight? The bearing cage sits at the base of this stub below the upper housing, which is the biggest PITA of the whole mess to get off.

You were right, there is a second bearing there and it was the one with the missing ball. I was able to snap the ball into place without taking anything else apart.
