Re: Nv4500

To my knowledge, the nv4500 didn't come until later (post square?).
Wish there were installed into squares, it would make the swap much easier.

OD would be nice, but a C-30 and mileage really don't go together. What are your goals and expectations?

Many more knowledgeable people here, I'm sure someone has done the swap.

Do you tow? If not, there are other ways to achieve that fuel mileage figure without having to go through so much trouble.

Example:
3.08 gears
low stall torque converter

http://www.tellico4x4.com/index.php/cPath/4519_4535
cheapest place online that i have come acrost for the nv4500

here in a fue mounths i will start a post on the swop. this winter is gana be a big one 2wd to 4wd convertion, nv4500 swop and fast ez efi install on my 383 stroker and im also puting 3.73 gears in got 4.10s now

the key to fuel economy is making your engine work less. and you wouldn't beleave how bad a carb is on mpg's because of a dirty filter

cfm's is a big deal let the engine breath it will make more hp's and the engine dosnt work as hard

anyway i got alot of info and dont wont to spoil the fun

The previous owner of my burb swapped to taller gears, not great for acceleration but I get 21mpg highway.

Re: Nv4500

i have a 82 that has 33 and runs 3.73 with a four speed and i get 16 to 18 going 75 down the road so u might want to look in to tuning your motor to run the gears you have so that it is making the best power where u want it to be. in the lows for towing or in the middle for highway or top end.

Go to your local transmission and gear shop. There are numerous places to get them online, but since you don't know where to get them I am assuming that you have never changed gears and it is a very involved process requiring specialty tools that you should leave to the professionals. Not saying you can't do it, just would hate to see you spend money to see it rattling around in your diff after you move a few feet.

One thing you should know is that it is expensive to have your gears changed, a simpler way might be just to get a lift and install bigger tires. That essentially does the same thing a gear change does, but in most cases, is a lot cheaper.

x2 I did gears in a 10-bolt rear once, and it was a pita, the mesh of the gears need to be right on or the gears will howl.

Re: Nv4500

my gear change is costing me $1200 and thats for a dana 60 and a 14 bolt plus a locker for the rear and a spool in front

your on the right track with the manual trans because you lose power transfer threw the tq converter this is why you can idle and hold the break in gear changing the stall speed will efect that

if you plan on getting a nv4500 i would get a trans tunnal out of a 4x4 blazer (its bolt in) and weld the 4x4 stick hole shut and cut your shifter hole out its about 4" farther back then the sm465 and you will have to put a clutch peddel and master cylender in. not alot involved just time consuming
