Camaro rear end swap

I've read the many threads on Camaro rear end swaps for 55-59 chevy trucks. I have seen the many posts, all of which are favorable. Seems as though most people use whichever rear end they have access too and not any particular year per say. My question is what Camaro rear end is the best all around swap and why in your opinion? I will be running a 350 motor and trans in my 56 shortbed. Thanks in advance.

Re: Camaro rear end swap

I used a 1979 Trans Am rear end ,I had a Nova ,Camaro ,and this Trans Am.The posi is what made me decide. But you are correct the rear was almost the same as the original in width.

Re: Camaro rear end swap

I'm with them. I have a late 70's disk brake Trans Am rear end to go in the 48. I'd suggest picking up a pair of Moroso Spring perches similar to these, http://www.jegs.com/p/Moroso/Moroso-...63126/10002/-1 and cutting the original perches off. You can usually get them through a parts house that handles speed goodies and has a Moroso catalog.

Re: Camaro rear end swap

Thanks for the input. Is there anything wrong with the 3rd generation rear ends. Are they almost the same width? I have access to both second and third gen rear ends, not sure which would be better. I want something that requires minimal work to install.

Re: Camaro rear end swap

I'm running a 78 Trans Am 10 bolt with 3:73 in my 56 with a 350 engine and 700R4 trans. Runs well on the hwy and in town.

The stock axle is 62" and the 78 Trans Am axle is 60 1/2"
