Taking out th400 and noticed filter is wrong or different?

I know that title sounds weird but I haven't seen a filter quite like it. Instead of being on the bottom of the valve body it is on the side and has a pick up like in the oil pan. I know it is a th400 but never seen the filter that is on it. It is on a 1972 c20 with a 350 cu.

I am leaning to the issues I have been having are the torque converter and will be changing that out versus rebuilding the transmission. It shifter nice and hard just would kill the engine. Sounds more like a torque converter. I am going to replace all the gasket I can along with the modulator and torque converter while I have it out.

Any ideas on the weird gasket? Can I modify it to use the other type?

Thanks
-B

Yup, had one like that in my '67 Olds Cutlass.

Re: Taking out th400 and noticed filter is wrong or different?

hmmm, it seems like this would be a pre-67ish tranny. From researching the internet mine should have had a bottom sump filter. I took the tranny out today and it has definitely been out before. Bolts aren't the same on the flywheel shield and torque converter. The tranny cross member was hacked up to all hell. The center portion of the cross member is cut on all sides except one.

Thinking about going with a tranny cooler. Where have you guys put one?

Re: Taking out th400 and noticed filter is wrong or different?

i had the older kind of aftermarket auto trans cooler - small radiator-like thingy with hoses running to/from the trans - I mounted it in front of the radiator.

Having said that, there are many newer kinds out there new - I've heard, maybe someone can chime in, that the linear ones that are built with longitudinal cooling fins are pretty efficient and effective (they are simply mounted in line).

Re: Taking out th400 and noticed filter is wrong or different?

Thanks for the info.
I think there was a leak coming from the speedo gear. There is a gasket on the actual speedo gear assembly where it goes into the housing. But there looks like there should be another one on the piece that actually houses the cable and screws onto the gear housing. Can any one tell me if I am wrong or have a picture for this??

I found it. Looks like there is another gasket that I was missing.

Shocker what I am finding with this truck. I am still wondering if I can convert this to a sump pan type filter. I want to buy a deeper pan but doubt I could do it without converting this. I am going to a tranny shop tomorrow to see what my options are.

Since the trans is not apparently original to the truck I would decode the trans tag and see where it came from so to speak. If it is a low-perf. early trans your money may be better spent on a replacement. See this thread for some info. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=523187

Carry over from this thread.

No tag on the transmission to decode. Havent worked on it much, just trying to clean it up.

SS TIM Curious- in that other thread you mentioned some numbers on the oil pan railing. Did you find out what those were for? with all the grime on mine I haven't gotten that far yet.

Those numbers were partial VINs that the factory stamped into the case on car applications. Just trying to see if anyone has a stamped truck and where it was built. Most likely you won't find them in a 67-72 truck unless the trans. was swapped from a car. If you can't ID your trans. case due to a missing tag and it has early features you would probably be better off looking for a later, known, truck trans..

Re: Taking out th400 and noticed filter is wrong or different?

Can someone tell me what torque converter I may need? When I emailed the manufacturer and asked I was told from the center of the torque converter to the center of the bolt hole and doubling it will give me the bolt circle/diameter. So mine is 12". When I go online It says 12" torque converter and then the bolt circle is 10.75"??? So I am a little confused on this. Also, if it matters, when I measure bolt hole to bolt hole I get 10.5" to the outer side of the bolt hole. Not sure where they are getting 10.75.

Anyone???

Re: Taking out th400 and noticed filter is wrong or different?

Got the tranny back in and crossmember in place. I still need to drill the holes for the tranny mount but that will have to wait. The bolt holes on the tranny are wider than the mount I order. I have to send it back and wait for a new one. Other than that I should be good to go. Hoping to have it back up and running this next weekend.
