Gloss or semi gloss black?

Hey all, kind of a stupid question but I'll go for it anyway

I have a '71 K20. I want it to look somewhat stock. Now, from the factory, did they use gloss or semi gloss on the:

Inner front fenderwells
Core support
Frame
And axles?

Thanks

They didn't use gloss on any of those pieces.

. . . .

The first picture below, was said to be from a '72 with 10,000 miles.

The second picture is from that '70 with 80 miles that was for sale a few years ago.

In each picture, you can see that most of those surfaces had a "semi gloss" finish.

The 80 mile surfaces seem to have a little more gloss though.

I use Krylon #1613 with some primer underneath for all of the above pieces.
It is it is cheap, looks stock, is available everywhere that sells Krylon spray cans, and touch up is only another $3/can or so.

Re: Gloss or semi gloss black?

I've always used a satin finish in the engine bay on all my older rigs (pre plastic parts). The satin keeps the factory look by not being too shiny, plus it doesnt show every oil or fluid drop like flat black or primer will.

There ya go.... satin finish is just a bit less shiny than semi-gloss and seems to have the right look.

Re: Gloss or semi gloss black?

I've been watching several of the Mecum auctions lately and I notice that many of the cars that fetch some big bucks are over-restored. They use gloss on nearly everything. Since trucks don't have the equivalent of NCRS, I'd go ahead and use whatever you want. Personally, I find the use of different types of black to be appealing and not as monotonous.

Re: Gloss or semi gloss black?

I've been using Dupli-Color,DE-1635,semi-gloss,high temp engine paint with ceramics.
Been under my hood for 3 years now without fading or changing color.

Re: Gloss or semi gloss black?

Each OEM used a slightly different shade of semi gloss depending on where they bought their paint from. Core supports, horns, brackets, inner fenders, rear ends, control arms, frames, etc, all had just a slightly different hue and "glossiness". Just about any semi gloss or satin will provide good results. The corvette restorers say John Deere blitz black is a very good choice.

Re: Gloss or semi gloss black?

Use both the Krylon and the Dupli-Color. It will help to break up the monochrome look of all the same shade and gloss percentage. The factory parts varied a lot between vendors.

Re: Gloss or semi gloss black?

DUH!!! I didn't think of semi and I didn't want satin, so I went with gloss. Looks good, but I think semi is the way to go. I'm using satin on arms, pumps etc.
