Need some A/C help

What causes the compressor clutch to slip when I put more than 1 can of freon in? high pressure side only about 35, low side very low????. it cooled for a minute..then the clutch started slipping. I let off some of the pressure from the high side and it started pulling again...Im thinking bad compressor

Did the clutch make some sort of sound that is telling you it slips? or is it getting hot, or is it so bad that you can see it slipping? How does the compressor sound? I would lean toward a clutch, but if your compressor has some age on it, I would replace the whole thing, always seems with my luck I put on a clutch and compressor isn't far behind and needs replaced shortly thereafter.

Before you throw parts at it, tighten the belt a bit tighter then you think you should. These things take a lot of juice to run.

I wouldn't think 35 psi on the discharge side is enough head pressure to cause a clutch or even a loose belt to slip. You should be able to turn the compressor by hand without too much effort. If not, it may be a tight compressor.

Check your charging system. Check voltage to the pigtail that goes to the compressor

Im not getting high pressure from my high side. I am leaning toward my compressor is not putting out enough. I did check my ground and hot side at comp. pigtail,it was good.

How do you know it is slipping as opposed to locking up? Are you feeding it vapor or liquid when you charge it? The later a/c units with an accumulator will accept liquid, but these will not.

That is what I was thinking as well. Liquids do not generally compress. Could very well be the freon in its liquid state is hitting the internals causing the compressor lock up and when some freon is released, there is enough expansion room available for the freon to change from a liquid to gas state before it gets to the pistons of the compressor.

This makes sense to me...but liquid or gas? how do you control this? If you put freon in on the low side it goes straight to the compressor. is it gas or liquid at that point?
I was wondering if the compressor was locking up...does this mean the compressor needs replaced? thanks..for all the feedback

The only way it would be liquid is if you have the can upside down while charging. Either way, once it's shut off it will return to a vapor within a few minutes.

My truck consists of a hurricane evaporator system with a 72 condensor and dryer.with.a 85 compressor and hoses. so if I have a 72 style accumulater (dryer) it wont accept liquid? what do I do to prevent compressor lock-up? I think that is what's going on.

If you turn the can upside down during charging you will send liquid. Leave the can right side up and put it in a pan of hot water to get it to "take".
