Re: ls swap or cummins?

An 8.1L is not a LS engine but if your truck has a big block now the 8.1L is the easiest swap as it is a direct bolt in outside of adding the wiring harness and electric fuel pump. You can even use your existing BB exhaust system and transmission with the 8.1L . A stock 8.1L in a Silverado is extremely neutered with torque management and emissions calibrations. A lot of people complain how gutless the 8.1L is in a Silverado. Their right, but it is all in calibrations, which is easy to fix.

Have a tuner add a nice tune to the 8.1L and you will have diesel like torque at a fraction of the cost of doing a Cummins swap. My truck weights right at 8,000 lbs and the 8.1L pulled 11.72 MPG on the last big off road trip. I don’t think that is too bad for a big heavy 4x4 with the aerodynamics of a drive-in movie theater screen. A stock 8.1L with Howell’s “Hot Tune” running 68-70 PSI fuel pressure is rated at 425 HP and over 500 lb ft of torque. I’ve never had it on a dyno but that feels about right. As big as the truck is it scoots very well.

There is no carb intake for the 8.1L so you would have to get up with the times and go with fuel injection. You wouldn’t regret it!

Cummins are great but they are very heavy and expensive.

Unfortunately they are expensive buy mainly because of the swap craze, I bought mine 5 years ago for a swap and paid 500 for the entire truck , you would be hard pressed to find the same thing for 2500.
