Basic Carb Questions

I've been thinking about upgrading the Rochester 2BBL currently in my '77. Think of it as not only an upgrade but also an opportunity to learn...

I've been looking at an Edelbrock Performer 600CFM and an Edelbrock Performer intake manifold. What kind of things do I need to know when choosing the right parts?

For example:
-Electric or Manual Choke?
-EGR or no EGR?

I'm ready to soak up some carb wisdom.

EDIT: Original 305 motor completely stock
