Hurst Indy 3 Speed Shifter - 3 on the tree conversion

I recently bought a 1984 C10 with a 250 straight 6 and a 3 on the tree. The steering column is very worn and will not throw the 2-3 shifter arm far enough to consistently engage.

The previous owner purchased and attempted to install a Mr Gasket 3 speed shifter. The shifter bracket nearly perfectly covers the speedo cable coming out of the transmission. The previous owner then removed that shifter and reconnected the column just long enough to sell the truck to me.

I'm trying to decide whether to buy and install a Hurst Indy 3 speed shifter for around $200 or put an auto in the truck. In the end, I see an LS motor and a 4L60E trans in this truck, but I'd like to drive it while fixing up some other items.

Does anyone have experience with the Hurst Indy 3 speed in an 80's truck? Does it work well with the speedo cable? Is there a better option?

God bless you, I went through the same BS when I bought my truck, had some p.o.s Mr Gasket frankenstein shifter bracket that would bind up on me all the time. I installed a Hurst Mastershift 3 speed kit and it fits perfect and leaves perfect access to the speedo port on the tranny. They don't sell one for C10s anymore but I just matched my transmission to the ones for the particular kit.

You can fix that column shifter for probably next to nothing. They just get all out of adjustment, dirty, and in need of linkage bushings. Here's a link on how to adjust them. I guess yours could be worn beyond repair, I just like those old column shifters.

I found that the other day and gave it a shot. It didn't help.

The issue isn't with the middle arm not engaging the R-1 or 2-3 arms, it doesn't move the 2-3 arm far enough. It's because the ball end or whatever is between the lever you pull and the lever that moves the shift arm is worn or bent or both. The issue is up higher in the steering column. I thought about replacement parts but haven't found a source. I also thought about different column, but I'd expect them to be worn similar to mine. Any sources or even an exploded view of the column?

I have a Hurst Indy sitting here in the box waiting to be installed. I probably won't have my truck up and running with it installed for at least another week or two though.

Responded to PM. I also have a very nice floor shift tilt steering column that would be a great upgrade for your truck. It has been completely disassembled and gone through.
