1964 stock rear end with 5 lug axles
Can anyone tell me issues on 1964 Chevy truck stock rear end -5 lug axles and wheel sizes. The truck will have 4" springs on the rear Would like to run the riddler from JD wheels in a 18x8 or 20x8.5
Also want to put a disc brake kit on the front with 2.5 drop spindles. Last edited by Lowry; 09-01-2012 at 03:02 PM. |

Re: 1964 stock rear end with 5 lug axles
first of all, Lowry, 5 lug axles aren't stock for a '64 so you need to clarify. do you mean you have a '64 you're going to change to 5 lug, either by filling and drilling or replacing the axles. or do you mean you have a '64 that has a 5 lug rear end in it. it can make a difference of 3/4" at each wheel which relates to your wheel size question

Sorry fleetsidelarry! Yes, I do mean a stock rear end and replacing the axles with 5 lug from CPP or performance online.

# of splines? 63-64 had 17 spline carriers. |That's about as much as I know.

Re: 1964 stock rear end with 5 lug axles
I know you're hoping for info from someone who has done it with those wheel sizes. those guys are out there but you may have to start another thread with the wheel size in the title to get their attention. I think it also makes a difference whether you have a stepside or a fleetside
besides that, I'd suggest gathering a few measurements from your current setup. measure the clearance between the tire and the fender flange and wheel tub/suspension. tire size, wheel size, and wheel back-spacing. these measurements provide a baseline to gauge wheel/tire combos. for example: my current wheel is 8" wide with a back-spacing of only 2", with a 275-60x15 tire AND a '71 rear end (wider than the original '66 by 3/4" each side), the PO had to crush the fleetside fender flange flat for clearance. the new wheels I'm getting ready to put on are also 8" wide have something like 4 3/8" back-spacing, giving me much more fender clearance BUT decreasing the inner clearance by that much (luckily there's plenty of clearance inside).

Re: 1964 stock rear end with 5 lug axles
Thanks for the information. I do have a fleetside. I am hoping to stuff an 18x8 under the rear with 4.5 back spacing. However, I have not ordered wheels yet. I was worried about he disc brake set up in the front and the rear with 5 lug replacement axles giving me the right amount of clearance. I will start a post with wheel size as you suggested. Thanks again.

The 5 lug conversion axles are not going to change your WMS to WMS from what it is now. Your front width will depend on what spindles you go with. The CPP modular spndles are supposed to not increase your width from stock.
