Share what you do before first drive!

My truck has been 95% finished for several months, I'm just lacking motivation. All I have left to do is bleed the brakes and check why the lights aren't working with the new harness. I'm also having a problem with the brake pedal not returning, it just stays depressed. (need a stronger return spring?) I think I keep putting it off because I'm honestly pretty nervous on the first drive. I'm especially nervous the transmission TV cable may not be adjusted right.

Anyways, what do you all do before you take a long time project on the road for the first time?? I'm going to focus tomorrow and Labor Day on getting this truck finished.

Hook up a pressure gauge to the 700r4 pressure port on the driver's side. Couple rules of thumb; make sure you have 2-3psi at idle, make sure your throttle doesn't bottom out the TV plunger, make sure your plunger returns all the way and make sure your cable doesn't get stuck. If you take pressure reading that's peace of mind.

I usually drink three or four beers and then ask my wife to take it out for the first voyage. Why should I risk my own life!

Question: Know how to sell your truck for $50,000?
Answer: Spend $100,000 building it.

I do a similar ritual, but with vodka, scotch or tequila. LOL

Start it. I've found it's much easier to enjoy the ride if they're running.

Seriously, check all the fluids, ensure no leaks, quick visual for anything out of place, then hop in and enjoy the ride. Small trip first, under a mile, and make sure someone's close by in case you have a problem. Throw some screwdrivers and pliers on the floor, maybe some vital fluids, and take a short spin.

I drive up the driveway around a big oak tree acouple times and back to the shop. check for leaks athen go around the block shut it off and look for problems. then go for a longer ride.

Re: Share what you do before first drive!

ON my '67 Mustang build, had to run of course, and brakes had to work(doah!)! It is very nerve racking! Then to build up confidence in it, I drive it to Moms(not far away), then to car gatherings(not too far away). I just worry if it were to stall, like at a red light~ people may stare and point! I don't have much confidence. I'm sure the same will go for my '59 Apache~some day ; )
