Need some help with carrier bearing

The replacement carrier bearing assembly I'm about to install is a little different (primarily cosmetically, I think its the right one) than the one I removed, and it's different enough from the one in the shop manual that I can't entirely rely on it to get it back in the right way. Translation: it looked simple enough when I took it apart a couple of months ago, and I should have taken better notes.

Anyway, the picture is below. My main questions are:

1) The way I've laid it out, is the carrier facing the right way? It has a steel dust shield on one side, the old one had rubber on both, so I don't know which way it should face.

2) The little "ring" in the picture... what is it and where does it go? It doesn't slide onto the splined section, at least without being seriously pressed into place. I have no idea what it actually is.

3) Am I missing any rubber seals? The shop manual mentions and shows rubber seals, but maybe they're already inside the assembled carrier?

4) Why does the end of the yoke have a screwcap on it? Just to hold grease in? Do I slide the yoke on with the cap already screwed onto the yoke, or is there more to it?

Orientation looks correct.

The "ring" in the photo is likely the grease seal that goes under the threaded cap on the yoke. The cap is there to retain the seal.

I too need some help. My carrier bearing is not like the picture posted above. Mine has a clamshell style mount. Is this even stock or some kind of upgrade? Has anyone seen this before?

There's two different kinds of brackets depending on if you have a coil spring vs a leaf spring setup.

Here's a pic of the stock carrier bearing on my '72 C10 with coil springs. I believe it is the "clamshell" style referenced above. I'm not familiar with the style in the original post.

Mine is different than your pictures. It has a big 4 bolt mount that clamshells the bearing in it with 3 bolts the hold the bearing in it. It is a lwb leaf spring truck.

I wish I would have taken pictures of it. I will tomorrow and post.

I have seen two different carrier bearings over the years, but I am no expert. One hung down and the other bolted at the bottom.

The ones I have seen bolted at the bottom were for trucks with SM-420/465 transmissions with larger diameter drive-shafts.

Ok. Assuming that you have put the splines or slip yoke in something solid like a vice and checked for excessive hinge movement (up and down play) and your 40 year old parts are in reuseable condition.

1. Knock the metal shield off of the front driveshaft.

2. Press,beat,whatever the carrier bearing with the metal pointed to the rear of the shaft or cut the metal part off.

3. Take the press on ring and throw it in the trash.

4. The screw on cap hold in a thin washer and a cork seal. Its easier to put the cap, washer, and cork on the splines before the slip yoke.

5. Install some ujoints that don't say "precision" or "napa" on them (preferably spicer life non greaseable or neapco) shim any excessive end play, make sure all of the keepers are installed properly.

6. Reballance shaft. Seriously. I'm not kidding. Even if you marked everything and have the equipment to check the shaft for straight the new ujoints won't be exactly the same as the factory joints.

Enjoy your driveline for another 40 years.
