Re: 63 doors wont shut

I have the same issue with my '63 on the driver's side. I was thinking about repairing or replacing the door latch. I already adjusted the striker to several different places and found that it did not help, only made it worse.

Re: 63 doors wont shut

I think it takes time for the seals to smash down into shape. New seals are always tough.

Re: 63 doors wont shut

As 61 FL Apache said,
I had the same problem on a 62 Pontiac after I put all new seals in. I had to slam both doors toget them to close and slam the trunk HARD usually several times to get it to close. After a month or so they closed very easy like they are supposed to.

Re: 63 doors wont shut

try adjusting the lower triangle wedges, I was having problems on a 63, and that helped, didn't have new seals though.

Re: 63 doors wont shut

The nylon bushings in the hinges wear out after 40 years.

Then the door starts to droop and does not line up with the door striker.

You can buy replacement copper bushings to replace 'em. It's a job tho', easier with two folks, especially when putting the door back on.

Re: 63 doors wont shut

I did mine about a month ago while I was painting, and the thickness of replacment seals is definately different.

Put the seals in THEN align your door gaps and bear-claw and striker positions. The aftermarket seals pinch in the FRONT, they end up "rolling" forward and pinching instead of compressing. You need have someone in the truck to hold the seal in place while you close the door firmly. Once its in the correct place, park the truck outside for a day and let the sun beat on it...the rubber needs to break down and be heat cycled before it fully conforms to the shut-points. Leaving my doors closed all the time, and keeping it in the sun when I can, my doors shut firmly after about 3 weeks.
