new to me 69 K10! help with steering issues!

hey guys, new to the forum, AND CHEVYS!!! i recently acquired a 69 K10, and i LOVE IT! its in fairly good running condition, been sitting for around 15 years and it took some work to get it running, but its WORTH IT!

problems start with the gearbox, it is SHOT. there is a significant amount of play in the steering wheel- almost unbearable. this truck has MANUAL STEERING, ive noticed that not only are these manual steering boxes hard to find, they are also expensive! i have read a little bit about power steering swaps, and it seems fairly straight forward.

would a power steering swap decrease the value of my truck? im trying to keep it as close to OEM as possible, but would like the comfort of power steering. the power steering gear boxes are cheap, and i have access to many many various parts- i work at a junkyard so getting a pump, lines, and brackets is not an issue. and if possible could someone throw me a link to a manual gearbox? only place ive seen is rockauto...

thanks in advance for any help!

I think the swap won't hurt the value. Most people will want the power steering anyway. It would have to be a 100pt restoration for the modification to hurt it's value.

You can get them from LMC Trucks as well.

I agree with adding power steering won't decease the value. It's like adding FDB. Both upgrades will only improve the truck. Good luck with the build project!

awesome, thanks for the info guys! ill be sure to start a build thread when i can get some time to do some stuff to my truck.

another question, would a power steering pump from a newer chevy work? say 77 - 87... there is lots of third gens for parts where i work. looks like they mount the same as earlier models. may also look into using a gearbox from a newer truck if possible!

Yes.Though the later models use metric thread so you will need the complete setup from the donor vehicle.

Thumbs up Re: new to me 69 K10! help with steering issues!

I'd go with the power steering upgrade. I know that for myself, if I was looking for a truck I'd want power steering. LMC is a great place to buy the entire setup. Best of Luck
