ebay - HELP! Ugh - frustrating.

So,
What recourse does one have when a bidder wins the bid, after outbidding a few folks, and then, 8 hours before the reserve is due, backs ouit of the transaction?

He left me a voicemail (i.e. avoided comms thru ebay (records)) and said he "just thinks he can't do it now" Seems he would have come to that conclusion long before after asking me about a hundred questions about it and me paying the listing fee, etc etc.

What has happened to sticking by one's word!?

What a douchebag. I hate, hate, hate having to re-list stuff on ebay. I think I hate ebay period.

I know, lotsa threads out there like this already. But I just had to vent. Had another solid bidder with LOTS of positive reviews, 100% in fact, and this douche outbid him - and then backed out. Un-friggin-believeable.

He's not a member - or at least didn't claim to be one when I asked him and he was drilling me with 15 questions a day. Holy bookends batman, I'm pissed off.

I haven't sold anything on fleabay but I know your frustration. I had something for sale, when the guy called, I told him I was firm on the price, he came to look at it, I got it out of the garage and all together, he gets there and gives me some sob story about why he couldn't pay the firm price and how it was going to set him months behind on his car or house payment....I pushed it back in the garage, shut the door and went back into the house, never said a thing.

Allowed
Using listings to find buyers who are interested in purchasing your item
Including information about what buyers will need to do next (for example, deposits, transfer paperwork, and transportation options) in your listing
Adding a reserve price to your listing so that your minimum price is met

Not allowed
Bidding without the intent of completing the purchase
Retracting a bid on an item that doesn't fall into a non-binding bid category
Backing out of the transaction due to buyer or seller remorse
Backing out of the transaction because buyers didn't place a high enough bid and the seller didn't add a reserve price
Stating in the listing that bidding could result in a binding obligation to complete the purchase


All you can do is report him. It may tarnish his reputation as a buyer but only slightly unless he does this often and is reported each time.

If you know the name of the other guy on ebay you could try contacting him personally instead of putting it back up

eBay sucks now, I just closed my store because the sons of *****es were charging 5 % on shipping, even though I never charged more than it was and often less.

Use the second chance offer ... Thus allows you to go to the next highest bidder if the primary bidder falls through... I have used this several times, and it works nicely... Pm me if you need further info

Bazooka - What is the benefit of cancelling the transaction if the guy refueses to pay?
Does it save me anything in fees, etc?
Do I have to do that prior to offering a second chance to the next bidder?
Will I not be charged the listing fees and/or selling fee if the buyer asks ebay to cancel the transaction?
He may do that. He at least "says" he feels really bad....

I do plan to do the secand chance thing once I figure out what I need to do first.
Ebay won't let you submit anything to the resolution center for unpaid stuff (Bazooka's 2nd link) until 4 days after the sale ended.

or - if I have him cancel the transaction, do I lose my chance to do a second offer to the 2nd guy? Should I just offer it to him now? Seems ebay mentiones a $125 successful something or other fee - does that mean I have to pay $125 a 2nd time? or just once....?

Just file against him as non paying bidder. I am sure he has a sob story and feels bad... tough. If you don't have money, you don't bid/buy. Move on to your second chance bidder as soon as you can. Seems to be alot of those clowns lately.

I can relate as to dealing with some of these type of people. Dont let it get you all upset and get your blood pressure up at the end you dont gain anything..

The benefit to canceling the transaction would be getting credit for the final value fee.

I don't think you get a refund for the listing fee though which doesn't really matter if you complete a second chance offer with another buyer. You wont be charged another listing fee and will only be charged for the final value fee for the second chance offer and not for the deadbeat.

From what I read there I think you can send the second chance offer without canceling the transaction with the first guy. I would try that route.

you can always call ebay up and ask. They used to have a live chat feature also not sure if they still have it.

I quit selling on Ebay because of the fee's. And the fact that they want you to list a shipping amount when most of the time it is not possible.
It's not even fun buying there anymore.

I've had good luck on selling my last two auto's on eBay with actual paying bidders, I hope it goes well for the one I have going now. Good luck and let us know how it turns out. By the way the truck you had on there is very nice....

thank you - it's been a labor of love, but time to clear the garage for the next one. Yours has gathered tons of interest, hope the guy that wins the bid is good to go for you.

I have sent the "second chance" thing out already - if you all see me back on ebay next week, that'll mean it didn't work out. I'm starting to think it's just meant to be that I keep ol bessy - this is the 2nd buyer to back out after commiting - first one was not on ebay. It'll all work out - I've taken a chill pill and will wait and see what happens.

the last time I sold on ebay was christmas season of 2009, I "sold" 1100 worth of stuff and got "paid" for 36 whopping dollars worth. 14 of 15 bidders backed out after winning and there wasnt a damn thing I could do about it. one guy jerked me around for 2 month saying he would pick up in person, and finally admitted he was stalling til I couldnt leave negative feedback. now you cant leave negative feedback for anyone. I will never sell on ebay ever again.

I've been through the exact thing before. So, from personal experience....
Do a 2nd chance offer to the next highest bidder only (the option is there to make the offer to everyone who bid)
You can set a time limit for the 2nd offer guy to respond. I usually only give two days.
Your final value fee will be refunded if the 2nd offer guy doesn't buy, and you'll be able to relist for free, but you have to wait 7 days after you file your non-paying bidder claim to relist for free.
I know there's a lot of frustration with eBay, but where else can you list a truck or part that is listed worldwide? I've had a lot more good luck than bad. And, I've sold several vehicles that went overseas.

I quit Ebay after trying to sell a Harley there a couple of years ago. The winning bidder never contacted me until a week later claiming his wife got mad at him. And I got chastised on here for deciding filing a claim after 24 hours. Really? If you bid on a Harley and win you are too busy to contact the seller?

They should require bidders on large ticket items to put down some money up front BEFORE bidding. For example, if you want to be approved to bid on anything over $5k you should have to put $500 in Ebay's escrow before bidding...win the bid it goes toward the sale. Back out and the seller gets it. That would cut 99% of the liars and something-for-nothings out of the picture.

Leevon, i like how you think - the escrow thing would be an excellent improvement. Could/should require paypal, auto refunds to your own account if you don't win the bid.

Well - I did the 2nd chance to the next highest bidder - and he was the only other one that exceeded the reserve. Didn't even get a "no thank you" - nothin but crickets...

Anyhoo - am now going thru the process of the "resolution center" so I can relist for free. What a pain in the butt.

Buyer seems to have had a change of heart, again, and now wants to buy it, again, after having backed out previously. Maybe the resolution center "scares em straight" or perhaps he just got cold feet and has reconsidered. Anyway, as of today, he's back in on it - hopefully will follow through and finish the transaction.
