How to install modern radio

I didnt want to cut the dash so i put the stock back in. I bought a modern radio and i want to install it so that you can see it somehow, not tucked away in the glovebox. any recommendations?

should have bought a modern replacement like my wife did for my truck, it works, thats all i needed....i didnt want to cut up the dash either

return it and buy a different one

i considered that, but i could but a modern one, speakers, sub, amp all of the price of that replacement.

They also make single din. I have this under the dash of my mustang, cheap and awesome!

lol, im a 30 year old poor white boy too... my radio wasnt expensive, by the time it got to my front door it ran me about 165.00. it was from classic parts of america with a promo code we found. you can find that code on google if you search for it

Look up a company called Retro Sound. They make modern digitil radios with usb port and aux port for old cars and trucks. These radios have the knobs and everything like the old radios but its completely modern so that should solve your problem. Best part is u dont have to cut the dash

Wondering how come everyone has to cut there dashes?
I didn't have to cut my dash. I got a Pioneer stereo and it fit right in. Snug too.

I'd like to see a picture of your installation, I have a feeling someone might have clearanced the hole a bit before you got it..

I plan on a modern radio.I don't plan on cutting the dash.I'll probably use one with a CD player.I'll need an amp since Panels have lots of interior area.I don't want to have to open the glovebox to get to it to change stations or CD's or whatever.I think I'll just build a custom console to hold all of that and a couple cupholders.I think I''l make it a lock in unit,maybe using a couple of seat belt buckles on modified brackets,with a plug to connect speakers and power lines.

If that dosn't give you any ideas,you don't have a creative gene.

Anyways, the original radio was in my truck when I got it. Then I took it out. The FM fuse was blown. But I can post pictures a little later with the old one in and then the new one in.

I eventually cut the dashes of all three of my trucks and have not regretted it at all.

Not sure if this will work, but the dash is a little beat up. I couldn't figure out how to get the radio out. Then I realized it was secured by 2 bolts on the back. lol

Oh and where it looks like it's rounded on the sides where it looks like knobs used to be, that never used to be there. Looks like that cause I took a flat head to it and pried the radio out. As mentioned, I didn't know there was 2 bolts on the back. lol

I agree. Unless you are going for Concours restoration or can live without modern music formats I don't see anything wrong with cutting the dash. I cut mine and also tack welded that receiver box into the hole!

That's pretty crazy... someone cut the radio hole, to replace the stock 2 knob radio, with another 2 knob radio.

Yeah, sorry to say yours has been cut as well. Just take a look at Tommys72 (Post #2), and you can see that the original dashes have the small rectangle and two holes for the original type radios, not the big single DIN hole that the new types use.

Hey Biggestjohn....do a search in truck audio for bezel or faceplate....there are several threads that have references to people that sell them.

brisonac: to get back on topic of a recommendation for the radio. Instead of going out a cutting the dash like you don't want to and since you're low on funds like myself (poor young white boy).
You could get a CB holder and put your stereo in that. You can keep the stock radio in for now for looks or something and mount the CB holder/stereo under the dash by your key hole.
I think that would be really easy and cheap, plus you don't have to cut the dash.

If you decide to cut your dash, mark it and cut it carefully. Then save the pieces and mark the backs of the pieces with "L" and "R." Take the extra time to do clean cuts.

This way, if you ever have regrets, or go to sell and someone raises it as an issue, you can show them the pieces which could be welded back in if desired. I did this on my '78 restoration.

For my '72, I used a Retrosound deck (see build thread). I've been very pleased with Retrosound. The deck has great sound, adjustable fade, treble and bass and have not had any alternator "whine."
