Battery size suggestions
I'd like to use the stock battery tray and hold down in a 1955 3100 stepside. What would you guys suggest as a good battery to use? I'm running a 350 SBC/700R4, A/C, descent size stereo, umm not sure what else to mention.

Re: Battery size suggestions
look for a battery that has good cranking amps... Group 24 seems to fit the trays ok but you may be able to go a little bigger. just get the ruler out.. But a lot cranking amps is what you're shooting for..

Re: Battery size suggestions
If you want to use an original style hold down that goes around the top edge of the battery you'll need to shop around for a battery that doesn't have the built in handle. Those won't fit the bracket.

I like the optma red top, it is gell cell and wont leak and is zero maintanance.

Re: Battery size suggestions
I got mine from Walmart, the Maxx series. I measured the stock battery tray bottom and they had one that fit perfect. Have no problem cranking my stock 283 V8 at all. Also, the stickers come off easily leaving a clean black battery.

I've got the factory box in my '57 and a set of new repro hold-down bolts and would like to have a battery that fits right. I need a battery that fits the box size and is the right height. The new hold-down bolts I got are too long for the battery I've got in it now as the battery isn't tall enough. |

Re: Battery size suggestions
Group 24 or 34 (top posts) will fit as well as 78 (side treaded posts) Most battery companies make a 34/78 with both sets of posts. Check the battery tray size as some higher amp Group 24 are longer and wider and will not fit.

Re: Battery size suggestions
Guys, I'm late to the party on this one, I picked up a battery based on the group recommended in this thread. OOPS! I have a AD that is only about 9 inches and the 24/34 are 10 inches. I'll return it tomorrow, but I like the 800 CCA it has.
