Arrow Engine Problems

I have a 1962 Chevy C10 Shortbed completely stock. I am having some problems with the inline 6 motor that is in it. After not running for 20+ years I finally got it to start up. However, it will not idle for very long. I will turn the key (a few times) and the engine starts up and sounds great. Then after a few minutes of it idling, it just shuts off. I have changed the idle to high and low and have kept a really high idle by using the gas pedal, but it still turns off.
It also has a new fuel pump, rebuilt carburetor, new gas tank, new hard line, and new filter. Any ideas on whats wrong would be greatly appreciated. Or maybe it is time for a new v8 engine.

I have a 66 with 250 inline and love the little engine. Is it possible it is vapor locking on you? I notice you have a new fuel tank and lines. Is it an oem style thank behind ethe seat or did you move it to the rear, and what type of cap do you have on the fuel tank?

Have you determined if you are losing fuel or spark? How long does it sit before restarting? What does it take to restart it?

The tank is oem and sits behind the seat. The gas cap is a new oem non-locking cap.


It normally takes about a minute to get it to start up again after it dies. On occasion it takes a good 5 minutes and requires a quick shot of fuel ( I forget what it's called ).

When it shuts off is it staving for gas or is it flooding? Look down the carb after it dies. If gas is running in it is flooding. If it is dry work the throttle & see if gas pumps in. If not you have a fuel delivery problem.

May have a cracked gas hose or rust and debris in the tank, install a filter between the tank and fuel pump and replace all the rubber lines. Blow out the steel lines when you have the rubber lines off.

perhaps check and see what your fuel pressure is, maybe a faulty pump.

I would still suspect the new filter in a truck that hasnt been on the road in a while. tank rust will fill up a filter in minutes. then when you shut the truck off the rust falls away and opens the filter up again, till it runs for a few more minutes and the suction pulls it up again.

take it loose and shake out the inlet.

I agree, it sounds a lot like a fuel filter problem, I found two inline filters on mine. At first I thought there was only the one. I replace a bunch of stuff before I found the other one. Crude in the tank kept plugging both filters until I took it out and cleaned it.

but I think that he covered the gas thing. he did install a new tank ,lines,etc

This is kind of left field, but does your gas cap have a vent hole? ...OR could it be plugged? I had a car along time ago that would start up fine, but would die on it's own for this reason. Good Luck!

I doubt the fuel filter is plugged though as the tank is new and the hardlines, while not brand new I completely cleaned the inside of them so no crud was in it. I could check the new fuel pumps pressure but theoretically it should be fine (Doesn't hurt to check though). The gas cap does not have a vent hole. I have replaced all the old rubber, put filters before and after the fuel pump just in case there was crud. I could have a vacuum leak as I have not been focused on that. Eventually, if I keep this up, the engine is gonna look brand new.
Gotta love these old cars.

try starting it with the gas cap off, no venting creates a vacuum in the tank- but it more than likely is not running long enough to affect it.
remember most of this rebuilt stuff now is a product of China; not everything is at it seems.

I had the same problem on my truck - V-8, new carb, new fuel pump, new filter.. chk the carb to see if it is flooding or starving for fuel or remove 1 plug to see if it is fouled... exactly what Wrenchbender said.. mine was flooding. I removed the top carb plate and readjusted the floats cause they were set to high from dealer (Edelbrock) and cleaned my new plugs again...

Well I looked inside the carburetor after it died and there is no gas coming into it. So it is fuel related just got to figure out what.

Have you sorted problem yet? Tried running with gas cap OFF? Does hard line from tank attach to pump via short piece of neoprene hose? If old, they can 'suck' closed when running.

SORRY. My bad, above. You had already said you replaced all rubber...be sure it was 'rubber' for fuel line and not something like vacuum hose? Just trying to help, esp. with problems I have experienced myself.

with the new tank did you replace the pickup sending unit? sounds like the fuel sock is restricting flow o gas out the tank

the quick check for gascap problem is if you remove gascap and hear the wooshing noise from pressure/vaccume you have a problem with your venting
