Does your SWB handle like a car?
So I'm driving around in my C10 LWB today and was noticing the large turn radius, the backing characteristics, etc. You see, I've never driven a SWB. My K5 is lifted with 35" tires and, well, drives like a truck. All my other old trucks have been 4wd, leaf sprung, or with a solid I Beam front axle, or modern suv's or trucks.
So tell me, is your 67-72 SWB (coil sprung, especially) more car like? Does it turn quicker? Is it more responsive? Is there less roll? You autocross guys please chime in.

5/7 slam here. handles like it's on rails going around corners, rides like a cadillac otherwise.

Re: Does your SWB handle like a car?
I've never driven a 4wd, so I don't know how they drive. My 68 with 4.5/5.75 drop handles almost as good as my old ElCamino.

Re: Does your SWB handle like a car?
My 70 SWB stepside drives excellent. Rides firm but not harsh. Drives straight & corners excellent. It is s tock height with front sway bar & HD front shocks.

Re: Does your SWB handle like a car?
I have driven mine with a static drop 4/6 and with air bags both ways it hugged the road pretty good. I feel that with the air bags it drives better and softer than it did with the springs.

Re: Does your SWB handle like a car?
My SWB drives like a car too, Monroe Reflex shocks all the way around, stock height, "performance" alignment and Hellwig front and back sway bars. Its not my 2011 Cadillac CTS Performance edition but like LeddZepp says, it corners on the exit ramps, ". . . like it's on rails"! It is the best riding truck I have ever had and I have had 5. Also, we tow a dual axle 16' Aljo travel trailer- it has great visability and turns really tight. We have a Prodigy P3 brake controller. I am very happy with the ride comfort and towing. Many times the old truck is the first to leave the driveway for running errands.

Re: Does your SWB handle like a car?
Mine doesn't ride like a car but it's not bad. I installed a p.s. gearbox that improved my turning radius and got a newer seat for the front that was the rear seat of an '86 crew cab. Seat has a thicker foam to help out on the bouncy country roads.

Re: Does your SWB handle like a car?
I am lucky and have 2 shortbox stepsides both handle very well but for better handling it needs lowering and big sway bars, handles like a monorail rides as good as my Benz

Re: Does your SWB handle like a car?
Absolutly not!!! 3/5 drop on a longbed. I keep seeing threads like this and I have not found that smooth ride yet. CPP coils on stock spindles with the Dostech shocks. Front swaybar from cpp. I actually just changed from a rear 4 inch heavy duty to a regular 5 inch coil which now I need to install a
c-notch from bottoming out. First I thought it was the seat. But I was wrong. |

Re: Does your SWB handle like a car?
67 short fleet, 4/6 drop, 1 ton sway bar on front, 4 wheel disc, quick ratio steering gear box here.
So, I do feel that my truck on smooth roads, does handle pretty good, but it is still a truck and without any load in the bed, the back end it too loose to say it handles like a car. |

Mind blowing stuff. 3/5 drop c10 with no sways handles poorly. Ece spindles, 1" front spring, stock height Kyb gas adjusts front. Full ece 5" drop kit rear. Stock ratio steering box too.. Got an ece front sway, ez locker, and ece Kyb front drop shocks waiting for it. If it's gonna be slow, atleast I'll be able to do some sideways shenanigans. '05 gmc longbed-crappy g-80 locker, almost quick enough rack and pinion steering, z85 front bar with poly bushings, hellwig rear bar, lots of other suspension junk. Handles great. The long wheelbase makes it look like you know what you're doing during sideways shenanigans. Front coils, shackles and hangers, overload delete (with hellwig traction spring). 3/4.5ish drop. Turning radii are probably similar between the two. But some trimming can probably be done on the c10 spindles. Posted via Mobile Device Posted via Mobile Device Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Does your SWB handle like a car?
My 70 k10 handles, drives and stops like a 2001 4X4 Yukon (real nice,, if ya know what I mean!) I think your difficulty's may stem from a 40 year old suspension.
