87-88 Chevy 305 in to a 66 Truck with stock trans, Have some questions
I am gathering the parts that I need to put a 305 chevy into my 66 c-10 with the maual SM420 trans. I Have a few questions/concerns with my swap.
I will be using either a 87 305 with a carb, or a 88 305 TBI both from Camaro's. Trying to keep this budget friendly as this is technically my parts truck(thats what the wife thinks). Just looking to build a driver as a backup truck. 1.) The first being the Fly wheel. Do I use one from the year of the engine, or the year of the trans or just after market? any suggestions? Crank bolt pattern different? 2.) From what I understand I will need to use the older mounts(pre '73) from a V8. 3.) will the Bell housing mounted starter still work? I will see if the stock camaro exhaust manifolds will work, if not I will use headers. 4.) clutch? what to use for the swap? Radiator will be one from a 283, and if it is no good, I might use a universal aluminum. anything else that I should consider or ponder? Thanks in advance for your your help and input.

Re: 87-88 Chevy 305 in to a 66 Truck with stock trans, Have some questions
I was able to put an 85+ sbc (not sure the exact year) in my 65, I used the flywheel and clutch, and motor mounts off the 283 that was in it., had no other problems, except for the ##@% flat cam that was in the motor!!
stock radiator 283 ram horns, points ignition all switched right over. camaro exhaust manifold may dump right into the clutch linkage... header might too.... belhousing starter fit fine

you can use the bellhousing ,flywheel and clutch assy(starter also) from any eng I6-283 from 63-whatever year that they went to the 1 piece rear main seal; other than that you have to use the corresponding flywheel and starter

Use a clutch that is for your year of truck with a SM420. That will be a common 11" clutch with a 10 spline hub. If you do go with the EFI you will also need to supply a VSS (vehicle speed sensor) signal to the ECM for proper operation of the engine. This can be added onto your speedo connection on the SM420. If I had a choce and both engines being the same condition, I would go with the EFI.

Thanks for the Replies. Looks like I need to locate a flywheel, clutch disc, motor mounts and exhaust manifolds. I hope for a great fairly cheap project. things might get interesting as I might have access to a LT1 engine for cheap, it just depends on if it has a harness or not.

I just noticed that you're in CdA also
You can get a new after market flywheel at Spauldings for a reasonable price. They are made in China, but we used one in my son's '63 with no problems yet. The OEM flywheels aren't real easy to find. The motor mount brackets I have. The exhaust manifolds, I might have, I'll have to have a look. Quote:

Yes they are more common in the trucks, but around here the majority of the newer trucks seem to have automatics. The one piece rear main small block flywheels/flexplates interchange from '86 thru '02 when the last Gen I small block was available.

Is a flywheel from a mid 90's camaro-firebird 168 tooth? My plans changed a little: I am pulling my carbed 350 from my good truck and putting in a lt1(yeah) and hope to find a decent manual overdrive trans. My th350 is shot. Still plan on getting the parts truck running too. Anyone know if a manual 5 speed trans from a 88 full-size truck has mechanical or electrical driven speedometer? I know in 89 all trucks speedos went to electric. I want a manual overdrive that will still work with my stock speedo...is this wishful thinking? Posted via Mobile Device

Re: 87-88 Chevy 305 in to a 66 Truck with stock trans, Have some questions
I'm pretty sure a Camaro flywheel would be 153 tooth, but I could be wrong. You should be able to tell by looking at the starter bolt pattern. The starter for the 168 tooth flywheel will have the staggered bolt pattern with both bolts the same length. The 153 tooth has the straight across bolt pattern, with one long and one short bolt.
The '87 and up trucks used electronic driven speedo's. The manual transmissions also were setup to use a hydraulic clutch only. You can always use a CableX to drive the speedo, but they are $300.00. The only other OEM 5 speed that has a manual speedo drive is the T5. Quote:

T5 huh, who would want one of those?, or at least in stock form... I don't mind going to hydraulic clutch. I will ponder this for for a while and figure out what trans to use. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: 87-88 Chevy 305 in to a 66 Truck with stock trans, Have some questions
Well I have found a manual trans option that I am searching for, it is the NP833, or also known as MY6 trans used in some early chevy trucks and vans. If I fail to find one I will be using a 700R4 I already have. Either option will be behind the lt1 motor.
Now off to search for a trans...

would a factory 88 chevy 1500 manual trans flywheel from a parts house work in this application? I have a 96 chevy vortec motor that I wanna put in front of the original granny four speed... would this work?

From what i have gathered so far (both mentally and physically), That flywheel should work just fine. Both motors have the one piece rear main seal. Clutch would work just fine with that flywheel.
