Unknown frayed/unconnected wire help

Crawling around under my truck today I found one wire with a blade connector on the end (I'd say an 18g stranded wire) frayed and only holding on by two strands. It was not connected to anything. Right next to it was a "female" connector also not connected to anything. One would assume they connect to each other, but I have no idea what they're for. I traced the wires back as far as I could and they seem to run up into the bundle in the rear hood rain gutter.

In the picture I'm laying under the truck looking forward and up into the engine on the passenger side.

72 350CI/THM350. The wire appears to be black.

The green female spade wire is very likely a temp sending unit, if you already have a gauge, it will turn on the idiot light on the cluster. That sender is on the block just above the starter under the ran horn exhaust manifold. You might have just a a plug in the block where the sending unit would go. The gauge wire (if you have one) usually is either going to a sending unit in the intake manifold under the top radiator hose or in the block between 1 and 3 cylinders. The other looks like a heater fan connector (??) but without seeing the inside of the connector it is hard to tell. VetteVet has posted wiring diagrams that are very useful, have you tried searching the forum? I am not on my other computer that I keep all that stuff on or else I would track it down for you. Thanks GuyO. I've yet to see any temp lights on the dash. I get a brake light when starting the truck, but nothing else. So I'm thinking you're right. Everything else on the truck works. I'll check the wiring diagram and fix and trace the frayed wire tomorrow...

No problem. That spade wire is most likely green even though it looks black. The other connector is on the wrong side to be transmission IMO. I have both a Powerglide and TH350 on the floor in the shop and they connect on the drivers side.

Have you checked to see if the wires are for the TCS (transmission controlled spark) system. It use a trans switch on the right side of the trans and a temp sender on the right side of the block that connect to a left firewall relay. Do a site search or better yet thumb through the factory manual for a full rundown.
