long vs short wp

I realize this is an engine-specific question, but asking specifically because I'm looking at a K10 with a replacement goodwrench engine...

Since it's a later engine, am assuming it has a long water pump, whereas our trucks had the short pump through 72 (though cars transitioned in 69 I've learned on here from other members).

Here's the question - since this truck would be a long-term plan of rebuild and potentially shoehorn in a 700R4 after bumping the motor forward a few inches - can a short water pump be fitted onto an engine that originally came with a long pump?

Same relative question for crank balancer and pulley forward fit to a newer engine...

Unfortunately, I don't know anything about how new that engine is other than it is a non-vortec goodwrench 350.

Thanks in advance.

The Goodwrench engine is a replacement engine. It is supplied as a "long block". All the brackets & pulleys are used from the old engine. Either the long pump or short one will work on it. They also have holes for the dipstick tube on both sides.

thank you gents! that what I was hoping to hear - and I wasn't sure if the goodwrench was available carb-to-pan with all the pulleys/accessories, etc - glad to hear it is just the long block. Thats good news.

If equipped with a lwp it probably also has an 8" balancer, which is too large for the SWP set up. The larger balancer interferes with the short water pump. You will need to swap it for a 6- 3/4". (I believe that is the diameter of the smaller balancer.)

Re: long vs short wp

I know you already have some answers but I have a 260 horsepower Goodwrench crate engine in mine with the short pump and a 4 core radiator and everything fits great.

Jocko, Either length water pump can be used on your engine, but ALL the brackets are DIFFERENT!! Unless you have access to COMPLETE sets of brackets, you had better stay with the water pump and brackets you already own. Complete sets of brackets are becoming hard to find, especially for the short pump. Roy

I have another question why in the hell would you move the motor forward.I've put 3 700R4 in and never touched where the motor sits if its a drop in Motor From GM and its the 290 HP crate motor. Most of the time you cut down the drive shaft and have it rewelded. its easyer to shorten a drive shaft them to make it longer

Re: long vs short wp

By moving the engine forward to the 4x2 V8 position and depending on exactly how you mate it up, the transfer case can remain in the stock location. Still chasing down the specifics for jocko.

True in a 2wd set up, but in a 4x4 it is a way to avoid cutting front and rear driveshafts. Notice the original inquiry mentions "K10"...I first thought the same thing, til I noticed the "K10".

Tim & Wideside hit the nail on the head. It's a 4x4 thing - not as simple to put a 700R4 in a truck with the T-Case, etc. There are a few threads on here about this swap if you google em.
