Opinions on carb/manifold comb.

My engine is a stock 350 with a busted Q-jet on it. Truck is '70 4X4 with granny 4 speed with 4:10 rear. Intended use is daily driver with very occasional offroad use. Keeping it stock is OK but installation of a new cam/manifold/carb. is not out of the question. Should I just try to find a good/new Q-jet or find something else? I know many of you on this board are very knowledgable on these matters and I value your advice. Can do a piece at a time or all at once, just need to get it running reliably again and soon.

Just go to the parts store and buy a remanufactured carb. About $100. You could always rebuild yours yourself, and it should work fine providing the throttle shafts don't need to be bushed. PAW and www.northernautoparts.com are two places you can get rebuilt carbs. When you do get the money, I would do either a Professional Products or Edelbrock Performer dual plane. I used to recommend Weiand 8004, and I still like it, but since being bought by Holley, the $78 intake is now $140!!!! Goes to show you we should be worried about these big companies sucking up the little ones.

The carb on it needs new electric choke, rebuild kit, float and the bushings are bad. Other than that it runs fine when IT wants to.

as far as a manifold goes/..i would go with whats called a "Dual Plane" ,itll give you more"low end" torque than a "single plane",cause with your type tranny & being a 4x4,you dont need your motor to redline at 7000rpm.A stock 4bbl carb will work fine with the manifold, youll notice a difference the first time you drive it,,as far as a cam change,if you have alot of miles on the motor,id wait till your next rebuild,.....

If the carb is original, get it rebuilt and rebushed. A new "universal-fit" Qjet probably won't run as well as the original, at least mine didn't. Luckily I kept the old one & finally had it fixed. Runs like brand new.

OK, getting a rebuilt carb, about $100. Which Edelbrock Performer is best? I know there were at least 3 different versions at the parts store and I couldn't see where one said dual plane or not. Cost about $130 at the local Auto Zone. Nearest NAPA is about 20 mi.

Oh, while I'm at it, what is everyones opinion on the Edelbrock polished aluminum rocker covers? I kind of like them but would like M/T's better.

Chuck, check out Edelbrock's web site if you are not sure. The Performer is the best for off the line torque on a stock motor.

Thanks Spinning Wheels, looks like Performer EPS #2701 will be the one. Hope I'll be back on the road tomorrow evening.
