water in cylinder, now wheres the leak?
hey guys i finished pulling the heads today. okay, cylinders 2,4,6,8 did not have water sitting in there. just pulled off the other head and cylinder 5 and 7 have water sitting on the piston. the gasket is still in place, but where would it be leaking by looking at the gasket?

Hopefully just the head gasket... maybe cracked block...

Looks like by the front edge from the pic, but it really doesn't matter. A new gasket will take care of it if the heads check out okay and aren't cracked.
Did you pull the heads because it was smoking coolant out the exhaust or running hot? If so, I would have them completely checked while you have them out. Now if you pulled the heads just cause you wanted to see the inside of the engine, it may just be coolant that was still in the passages when you loosened them.

if a cracked block, where could it be cracked? heads were pulled because of milky oil

Sorry I ment cracked heads, but a small crack anywhere where water and oil are circulating can lead to this problem. Hopefully its just the head gaskets. Inspect the heads, clean the surfaces, install new gaskets and hope for the best. Head gaskets fail all the time. Its not uncommon.

Also, make sure to seal the head bolts. Use Permatex white, it comes in a tube with a flat nozzle and torque to 65 ft. lbs in the roper sequence. Its possible the coolant is wicking up the threads.
