4sp gear oil.?

So what type of oil does the tranny use, I went to check mine and it seemed like it just normal oil and it seemed like to me it would use something more like gear oil.

Re: 4sp gear oil.?

Yes, it should be gear oil. My manual calls for either 80W or 80W-90 GL-5. On a more modern note, I bet you could use a synthetic 75W-90.

Re: 4sp gear oil.?

Cool thanks, I thought it should and I bet its got 30w or something in it right now as it came out like thin oil.
Looks like I will be changing that tomorrow. Would you happen to know about how much it holds ? Hopefully it has not hurt anything being full of light weight oil.

Re: 4sp gear oil.?

Sorry, my Clymer's doesn't have oil capacities. If you can't find out how much it takes, try 3 quarts, and you might return one for a refund.

Not that it helps but you're in good company.... that seems to happen pretty often.

Re: 4sp gear oil.?

Well it had ATF fluid in it. It does seem to be alittle quiter now and seems smoother driveing.

Re: 4sp gear oil.?

Wow.... some transfer cases use ATF but I never heard of a manual gearbox spec'd for it. Luckily it's actually a very good lubricant, but still....

Just got to thinking, I wonder if it could have been Redline gear oil? It's a synthetic with a reddish color.

Either way, at least now you know it has good fresh gear oil!

Re: 4sp gear oil.?

Did you ever check to see how much it held? Seeing this thread reminds me I probably need to check mine...

Re: 4sp gear oil.?

fill till it pours out of the fill plug. put the one side up so you can get a little more in and help lube the input bearing.

Re: 4sp gear oil.?

I have the SM465 just like you and when I got them rebuilt i went out to town to pick up some new fluid and every parts place (advanced, napa, autozone...) said to put Dextron III (formerly DextronII) in the tranny. I just couldnt believe it. Called a couple transmission shops and they all said to use 75W90 or 80W90. Either one will work. I went with Mobile 1 because thats what all the shops recommended. The transmission calls for 5 quarts of gear oil. Make sure the transmission is level or youll only get 4.5qts in. Filled mine up last week and found out my mechanic forgot to put the rtv seal on.... but thats a different story. Good luck
