Title issues in Missouri

I got the title for my 1970 chevy truck today, I bought the truck from Ross but the truck was given to him by Steven that recieved the truck as a gift/donation from Jeff who lived in California which is where the truck/title is from. Using names so this doesn't get confusing. After Steven recieved the truck/title, shortly after he recieved the truck he blew the engine. But, he signed the front of the title. He didn't sign the back, not sure if it matters. Steven never got it titled in his name. Steven gave the truck/ title which still had Jeffs name on the title to Ross who never did title it because the truck had a blown motor and he had planned on fixing it. Ross decided to sell it, I paid 1200.00 for a truck that is pretty close to rust free in the cab, a small amount of rust through in the inner rockers so I had to have it. I've contacted Steven and he said that there are fees because he didn't title it after he signed and dated the title 12/18/2009. I have a bill of sale from Ross, which seems meaningless because the truck is registered to Steven. Steven wants a 100.00 fee to get the title worked out, on top of the fee he owes the license bureau 200.00. The fee amount is minimal, but its still cash I could use. Couldn't I just file for a lost title and the only fee I would have pay would be a lost title fee which is $20.00, I have the title in hand. Any help on this matter would be appreciated.

Well in Oklahoma anyway a "lost title" is if I were the registered owner and I lost my title. So it would be just a replacement piece of paper. If I were in your situation I would file a "title 42" in Oklahoma and pay around $60 for a title specialist to sort it all out and get a title in the mail. You should go talk to someone at your tag office about what is the best avenue to take for getting a title in your state. In Oklahoma your situation would include hundreds of dollars of penalties from the last registered owner bringing it up to date and then transferring it to you but a "title 42" would skip all that and I could get a title for the mentioned $60. That and you can sign it all over the place but if it is not signed in front of a notary and stamped it is worthless here..

i've had to deal with this here in WA before. the paperwork you need is as follows to get a clear title

1- signed title (look closely at it to see if both front and back need signed, here in WA the back is for dealerships and leanholders only)

2- bill of sale from 1st person to 2nd person

3- bill of sale from 2nd person to you dated within the last 14 days

you don't need to deal with Cali DOT unless you live there. the orig owner will have to deal with that IF Cali DOT does somthing. given the time already passed that is extreamly remote.

Also the title will be "washed". meaning any brands gift,salvage,rebuilt will disapear.

talk to the your county clerk they will tell you for sure

Thanks guys for the help, I've got a friend that runs a junkyard and he has said he files lost titles all the time without hassel. I'm skeptical to how it could be so easy for him but not the average citizen. I'll see if he can help me tomorrow if he can.

The back of the California title has a place for the NEW REGISTERED OWNER which isn't signed and DEALERSHIP TRANSACTION

Steven wrote his name really small on the title portion TRANSFER BUYERS SIGNATURE. It looks like I could sign over it really easy. But, that could be another mess I don't want to deal with.

If that is all it takes to get a clean standard title to it and the the truck is worth at least the total cost on your local market then I would jump through the hoops. Here in California if you could even make it happen it would probably ran $1200 for the title, fees, fines and registration up to date.

I got a nice deal so, its not going to be a big deal, but I sure could use that money to buy parts with .

You don't need a title for a truck this old in Georgia, just a bill of sale.

Arkansas has something called a Bonded Title. In essence, you purchase a bond equivalent to the value of the vehicle. When the numbers are run, any issues will show up and you'll be protected.
