What gauge clusters will work for my 87 R10??
Hey guys, i am looking for a gauge cluster for my 87. I tried the one from LMC but it is too big to fit the dash opening. Tried for hours to get it to work but it is never going to fit. My truck came with the clock in the lower left hand corner. I have all of the gauges and they all work fine. I just need to find a cluster to transfer them over to. What years will work or does it matter?

I believe it has to slide under the metal on the right side first, then back to the left. 81-87 should be similar.

I tried every way imaginable but it just wasnt going to fit. It did specify that the one i bought was for non clock trucks. I just assumed the mount posts were the only difference. Maybe thats not true though. I tried wedging it in but it is just flat out not going in there. Only other thing i know to do is find a factory one and hope it fits.

Hey, they should all fit! I had a 70's cluster in my 86 for a while and it fit just fine, well they're all a pain to get in but it should fit. Might a quality issue with the aftermarket piece. Maybe try bending a little bit of the metal around the opening I had to with one cluster.

Re: What gauge clusters will work for my 87 R10??
Put the new cluster case next to the original (the one that fit) and compare them.
Either that, or take some measurements (of both boxes and compare)- at the points where you are tight. Remember, only the bottom lip of the cluster housing goes behind the steel shell of the dash. The sides and top have a small flange (maybe 1/4") and that stays outside the steel . Only the body of the cluster case goes in the opening. It is true that the opening is tight, especially in the lower LH corner. It is also perfectly acceptable to bend, file or cut the opening to accept the cluster box. Here is a picture - not exactly like real life but might help: BTW - I just looked at what LMC is marketing as a replacement cluster carrier. Can't comment on dimensions but, the image they show doesn't look anything like an OEM unit. Return the LMC one, get your money back and go to the junkyard. You can get an OEM instrument panel complete for probably $50. Last edited by chengny; 09-18-2012 at 05:27 PM. |

Re: What gauge clusters will work for my 87 R10??
Thanks for all of the info guys. I actually picked up a complete cluster today. 50 bucks. Your guess was spot on. Yeah the lmc piece is never going in. Have a good mind to call and tell them. I did modify it though to accept the clock mounting so returning is a no go. My fault for not going the other route though. The one I got today though is perfect. No broken tabs or anything. Thanks again guys.
