Magnaflow Mufflers - Which do I want?

I'm looking for a set of mufflers for my '70 402 that meet these criteria:

- Fits our trucks (mine's a longhorn, so no lack of space)
- No droning. No interior annoyance. Suitable for long trips.
- Sounds good when I'm angry

I have a set of Magnaflows on my big-block B-Body and quite like them. They're louder than stock, of course, but nothing more than a deep rumble at idle and cruise... though it still sounds like the world is coming to an end at full throttle. So that's kind of what I'm looking for.

Looking through their products, most of them are a straight through design except for their "Super Turbo". I thought Turbo mufflers died with Mr. Hooper on Sesame Street back in the70s, but there they are.

So... anyone heard the Magnaflow Super Turbos on one of our trucks, or have any advice regarding selection? I'm pretty much set on this brand based on prior experience and research. Just don't know what kind.

Also, what about pipe size? I'd assumed 2.5" but am guessing the original system was only 2".

Thanks!
Dave

PS: On my '69 2+2, if you got the 427/335hp motor, dual exhaust was an OPTION. What kind of world were they living in? Sounded like a monster leaf blower against the curb.

Re: Magnaflow Mufflers - Which do I want?

I have MagnaFlows on my Big Block truck and .. let's just say it will put cold chills on me. Sounds absolutely wicked. X Pipe, etc.

408ci, billet valve train, pretty healthy Lunati cam. I have only heard it run for about a min and we had to shut it down .. BUT, that's was enough for me. They sound great.

Re: Magnaflow Mufflers - Which do I want?

I have been thru a few mufflers since I frequent my local exhaust shop. The three brands I have pretty much stuck with have been Flowmaster, MagnaFlow, and Thrush. I like the sound created from all three. Normally I just tell the old man at the shop the sound I want, and he makes it happen. Haven't been disappointed yet.
From what you seem to be looking for in sound, I would go with a Thrush brand muffler (or DynoMax as they seem to be in business together). The Thrush Welded muffler has a low sound under normal conditions and under heavy throttle give a great tone. I haven't had any experience with the Thrush Turbo muffler, but I haven't heard anything bad either. I love the classic tones Thrush puts out.

It's all personal preference though, go with what you want and I hope you find the tone you are looking for.

Re: Magnaflow Mufflers - Which do I want?

Here is mine with Magnaflows and 2.5" exhaust. Healthy 350 with a pretty moderate cam. And it does all of this perfectly....

- Fits our trucks (mine's a longhorn, so no lack of space)
- No droning. No interior annoyance. Suitable for long trips.
- Sounds good when I'm angry

No seriously I love these way more than I ever did my Flowmasters

Funny you ask cause I went through the trouble of making one at work only to decide that for now I wanted to leave the bottom open cause I will be converting it to an automatic soon. I didn't want anything in the way for that and I probably will eventually bag it so I ran them on the out side of the frame rails and they tuck up above the frame.

Re: Magnaflow Mufflers - Which do I want?

I had a Cam Dynamics cam in a 69 Camaro that had that same lick to it. 286 if I recall.

I'll post some video of the Big Block as soon as dad and I can get it started again. It hasn't been fired since we found the rear main problem. (PO installed the rear main seal backwards )
