old license plates

If I have a set of old black and yellow California license plates off of another vehicle that is no longer registered is there a way to get my truck registered with those plates.

Re: old license plates

Call the DMV. Have them run the numbers on the plate. They will tell you if they are cleared or not, also they will tell you what years you can use them on. They must be commercial plates. Use the DMV "callback" service when you call them, it is awesome so you dont have to stay on hold.

Re: old license plates

If they are truck plates. The vehicle you put them on has to match the designation on the plate.
If they are plates that were on a vehicle you had in your name so much the better.

Here, check this out.

Re: old license plates

Under the YOM program you can register a clear set of plates that are correct for the year your vehicle was manufactured. Since your truck is a '62 I believe you would need a 1956 series plate (yellow plate black letters) with a 1962 sticker on it. The black plates started in 63, so technically would not be correct as far as DMV goes. I also think a lot has to do with how sharp the clerk behind the counter is and what kind of day they are having.
When I did my '66 truck, I needed two clear 63 plates in good condition with one new 1966 sticker to pass. I was turned down on the first try without the sticker. stickers you can get NOS or repro from ebay and either will work as long as the quality is high. If anything looks fishy, you will be denied. Good luck.

Re: old license plates

Just got my plate at the good guys show and it was simple to get it on my truck.. If you have a smart phone, down load your state DMV address and you can check the plate right there on the spot to see if its clean.. Here in AZ if the plate is clean but has not been registered for some time the numbers can get reused on a new plate. At that point its no longer any good.

Have you seen what they look like? It is a great idea... except they cost a $$ and you can tell they are not original.
