Poor quality items from LMC

Being that many are buying from them I thought I would post up on issues that I have had with there items.

I bought all of my seals and such from them.. Out of everything I bought I had to
replace the door seals,

re work/ find used channel steels,

replace the front windsheild seal.

door reg splines cut so poorly no handle would work

aucustic kit.. extremely poorly made and not even close to fitting

Speaker kick panels needed a fair amount of triming to fit.

Cab body mounts incorrect

inner door rests not lining up with factory holes.

Deluxe heater knobs look great but do not have the clip to retain to lever

There is more to post but I think you can get the idea...

So for seals soff seal stuff create no issues on fitment or getting the doors to shut.

Many things had to be searched out and found in great used shape vs the off shore stuff they sell.. Like the door handle set up, glass channel etc..

Most of these places are selling the same items, ( I know that is not the case with everything) so even trying another vendor may not be the fix.. Keep in mind that not only are you going to be installing parts but making them fit and work will be just another task to add to the list..

I have spent over 5 1/2 years on my frame off build and the truck is at 98% right now. Looking back I regrett some of the choices I made on what I bought and where I bought it.. But if my troubles and issues can help others in the future its all worth it..

Price seems to be a common selling point.. Sorry but with the amount of issues I had with seals alone I would pay double for the kit to ensure its trouble free and works correctly. Doing jobs over and over is not worth it.. at least to me..

I have messed around with the door seals for a week with moving the door, latch etc..
Had a guy that does a large amount of hot rods classic car glass work do the front and rear glass.. After about an hour of fighting with the LMC seal it was a no go. We where able to locate a soff seal item and the glass was a dream to install..
my truck is almost all 100% stock items. Front bumper and roll pan are the only items that sheet metal wise are not GM.. Both where not a good fit. So my issues are not with other items that are poorly fitted.

update

The LMC door limit straps are JUNK do not bother.. I happend to find a great set of stock ones in the salavage yard other wise the Jeep items I had read work great.

Maybe I should list the parts I bought that where a spot on fit... HA HA

I feel bad for the guys that bought all of that over seas sheet metal.. WOW those guys are spending huge time fixing the new stuff.. Maybe I am just picky but I just passed on a killer 57 nomad.. Reason it was from N Dakota and it was almost the price of what I can buy here and what is here in AZ is in better shape almost 100% fo the time if it is really from here.. I was lucky and my truck was extremely solid from a rust stand point.. dent and holes well that was just more fun than a bag of cats..

Re: Poor quality items from LMC

It is extremely difficult to find aftermarket parts that fit decent, especially if you've very anal about fit and finish. There are some places out there who provide quality parts, but you usually have to go through the same painful process you're going through right now before you find them.

Plain and simple, the off-shore parts that many of the parts houses carry are absolute junk. Many of those places are more concerned about having a huge catalog that makes the end user feel like they can shop there for all of their needs. I would rather spend the extra hours restoring an original part than trying to make a new repop part fit. You wind up having to work the edges and elongate every hole to make them line up. It's frustrating, having to do that to a brand new part right out of the box.

I feel your pain!

Re: Poor quality items from LMC

That's the reason places like LMC are so cheap and quality parts are more expensive.

I've tried them several times and their seal kits are absolutely horrible. And not just he GM stuff, either.

I buy very little from them, which is a shame, since shipping is only one day and I can be there and back in half a day.

Quality is always directly related to price. If you found parts there cheaper, theres a reason.

I went there today to get a few parts for my 56. The rad hose was a flex hose. The rad o-flow hose was vacuum hose. These might be OK on a DD but I want mine to look authentic.

I just got my cab mounts today. Might sound stupid but how did you know yours were not the correct ones. I don't have the old ones to compare to.

Hey wrench.. You should tell them what is going on with there parts.. Not sure if it would change anything.. I for one will never spend one more penny with them.

Re: Poor quality items from LMC

Well on my truck a 62 its is not the same as your 65.. They list they parts like this

Fits 60-66 , so I think HMMM well I would think they found a way to make them work or include parts for both.. The issue with the cab mounts was over two years ago so I do not recall 100% what or why they did not work..

Asfor mounts here is a tip that I found out the hard way.. Understand that with cab mounts and rad support mounts along with keep the lines of the cab & box.. All of this needs to be done way before paint etc. As the new mounts raise the cab well re use the old rad mount and you have a dip in the mid section due to the parts being bolted together, ( cab to inner fender, inner fender to rad support, outer fender to inner fender.. you get the idea) then you have issue with the box lines meeting the cab lines..

that is pretty basic to understand. that they all deteriorate and collapse over time. it dose have an affect on the body line. also why lots change over that rear cab mount on a 20 series trucks as those sag quite a bit.
most panels and suburbans have a different rad support bracket than pickups do. they have a rubber suspension between the bracket and the frame. This is due to the longer body of the panel and suburban. In the p/u you have that split between the cab and the box which allows more for flex

I hate to hafta agree with you. My experience, however, has differed somewhat from yours. Some things I got from them have been quite satisfactory while others have not even come close. Problem is: I NEVER know which ones are gonna fit ahead of time. And altho' they are quite easy to deal with if you need to return a non-fitting item, the shipping is another wasted expense and delay. Ive learned in the glass area, it is much simpler & often cheaper to deal w/my local 'we work at your shop' glass specialists, get a 'contracted price', & let them furnish both glass AND seals--ends up their problem, if any; and since they do it in volume, they have learned which vendors' parts fit & which ones don't. I ordered a big back glass & seal from LMC, & it was made out of thick double-pane safety glass (instead of proper, thinner tempered glass) & naturally wouldn't fit in THEIR seal. [Seal worked on tempered glass my glass-company furnished, however]. BTW: my door seals, door felt-swipers, channel-inserts, upper-and around-rear side-glass seal inserts, and vent-glass seals all came from LMC & they fit just fine in my old '66 C-10.
My opinion: It's a hit-and-miss from EACH of 3 different companies I've ordered from. So sad! Were I to restore another one, I honestly do not know from whom I'd order parts. Maybe attempt a special deal where they agree to pay shipping both ways when parts do not fit--and I might have to agree to ORIGINALLY order all parts from them. Even then, I'd ask for a thickness msmt. on the rear glass they intend to ship to me--in case they have not changed their vendor!!!

Is Brother's along the same line? I have a set of door and window seals from Brother's that I haven't installed yet in over three years (keep thinking I'm going to paint it). Should I just cut my losses now and order from Soft Seal or elsewhere?

If Brothers' seals you mentioned above fit as well as mine from LMC, I would not ask for better.

When I built my 72, I also, noticed the parts sucked real bad. I especially remember my gas filler neck rubber cracked almost immediately on astrictly garaged truck. Windsheild and back glass rubber was very poor fit. Who does sell good rubber parts?

Re: Poor quality items from LMC

I use lmc for stuff that I can't seem to find logically at other places...not that it doesn't exist...just that some of LMC's competitors have issues with site layout. Sometimes I'll see the part I need, based on their diagrams, and then try to find it other places with less luck.

GMC Pauls has a good reputation, and I've found parts their before, but the site is hard to browse sometimes, same with classic parts, based on the way they catagorize certain stuff.

I haven't gotten bad parts from LMC, although I haven't ordered a TON of stuff;
Door rubber worked fine for me, once I took a step back and realized it wasn't set up same as o.e.
Interior door card gaskets/crank gaskets
Turn signal lenses and hardware
Inside hood gasket, weather seals and bumpers
Rear window gasket

Re: Poor quality items from LMC

My initial order contained many items that did not fit my truck. The cost of the items did not warrant me shipping them back (time/cost) so I just threw them on the shelf for another use down the road. I did call customer service for some tech support and they were kind of rude. Basiclly it has been poor service in all areas.

I have had real good luck with Classic Parts. Nice parts and very helpful service.

Re: Poor quality items from LMC

I'd second Classic Parts (formally Chevy Duty). I've always bought from them and have had great service. Fast delivery, but then i'm only one UPS day away from them, here in Topeka. I have never bought replacement panels from anyone, so i can't comment on the quality of those. Though based on other threads, i don't think anybody makes any that bolt right on without some sort of modification.

I would not use any rubber products except Steele's, they are twice as much but you get what you pay for.

i thought i was the only one that received a bad window regulator. the splines are cast terrible. I have ruined 2 window cranks already. I guess i will file it and try to mimick the correct pattern.

Junk part for sure

Re: Poor quality items from LMC

This is not so much a ***** session as a "beware" post.. Tons of guys are building trucks and some are better off than I and others not as well off.. In my opinion I dont care where you stand on the money deal poor quality is just that ..

Getting a simple door reg that you cannot get your stock handle to go back on is just dumb..

Maybe a sticky on a basic parts list would be a good idea..

Seals " company X" works great , body mounts, trim, sheetmetal.. that would be nice as it would allow everyone to look at one post and get an idea of the type of part and one or more place to buy a item/s that will be a good fit.. If something fits decent and that is the best you can get and it needs work , a simple foot note stating the basic stuff.

In my opinion pictures speak louder than words!

If people would take time to post a picture of a Good Or Bad product it might make it easier to see why certain products are "JUNK" or great.

We have a chance as a Block of customers to give Valid reasons to make a Vendor tighten up it's quality control. Thanks for the heads ups on the bad pieses some of you have bought as a lot of us need the same parts!!

Re: Poor quality items from LMC

I did post up pics of how there window rollers are sized wrong and how to grind off the old roller pins and weld your stock pin back into place with the new roller, but a door seal is a hard thing to show.. Look at the door the gaps are very good but the rear of the door is out, that is due to the LMC seal being either too dense or molded wrong .. It is hitting too hard up front , sure move the door out ok then it will double l;atch on the striker and be out a mile.. a pic can show some things other things not as well..

LMC is not going to change.. for them its a price point plain and simple..

My hood springs came from another vendor.. its all the same supplier and they are not as strong as the OEM ones. For me its off to the pick a part to find a better set.. I plan on using a cheap fish scale to get a basic reading from my old ones and the new ones ( I will post that up) and finding something that is a harder pull for a given length.
