how wide can you go?

test fit some wheels today and it looks like i would need to be at least 3 inches wider in each fender to run them. how much wider can the fenders get before they look out of place? i saw one over the summer that the owner added 10 inches down the middle of the whole truck(roof, firewall, floor, hood, grille, bed, etc.) to make it fit another chassis. i admire his courage to do so but am disappointed with the final results.

i have seen 2 inch wider fenders turn out great. anyone have front pics of wider ones?
