which diffs on 60-66 C10s?

Did all C10s from 60-to 66 have the same rearends? Just checking cuz I am looking at a posi on a 62 c10 parts truck . Wondering if the carrier would work on my 65 for when'm I regear. Thanks.

No, they are not all the same. The '60-'62 Chevy C10's typically came with the Eaton HO32 differential. The '63-66's (actually thru '82) came with the truck 12 bolt. The Eaton HO32 carrier is not interchangeable with the 12 bolt. I would double check to be sure that that parts truck is actually a '62. There is also one difference within the 12 bolts, to be aware of. The '63 and '64 12 bolts had 17 spline axles and corresponding side spider gears in the carrier. Starting in '65, GM went to 30 spline axles and spider gears in the 12 bolts.

Thanks for the detailed info sir! So if it was a Eaton ho32 carrier it would likely be hard to sell if I didnt use it huh? I am pretty sure it is a 62 because the cover looked real strange unlike anything real common. Def not a truck 12 bolt. Thanks

And the older rearends had the gears drop out from the front, where the later ones were the normal 12 bolts.

The Eaton HO32 as well as the HO52 and HO72, had a drop out third member, but also a removeable rear cover that is perfectly round. The rear cover also has the filler plug. While the Eaton differentials were a decent rear end, the parts for them are becoming increasingly difficult to find.

Yukon gear sells a third member with 3.38 gears that appears to be right for my 60 but they call the rearend a gm55, have you heard of a gm55 and is this another name for the ho32 or a completely different animal?

I bought that same gear ratio and the name confused me as well, but it is the right gear for your rear end. Another name. My truck is a 62.

Keep in mind that if you want to go posi or disk brakes in the future, then your best option may be to simply change over the rear end. The gears alone may run you around $200 and the install kit another $50. Thats the cheapest i found the gear. I can now cruise at higher speeds without revving the engine.

Yukon lists a GM55P and a GM55T. The latter being the same Eaton HO32 truck differential used from second series '55 thru '62 C10's.

So the 3.38 gears are still available? I had heard that they were discontinued.

They are still available, you just have to know where to buy them. Especially for the right price. I only bouth them to keep the truck stock.

I called the closest distributor for me but he is at a convention in Vegas, he wanted my info and said he would call me back. I told him no enjoy Vegas and I'll call next week lol, I'll post when I find out the price,I'm fairly ignorant on how rear ends work from Yukon's site it looks like they make/sell just the ring and pinion vs the whole third member, how involved is that to change out I'm fairly mechanically inclined, just haven't done any differential work.Here is Yukon's link if anyone wants to see it or had trouble finding it.

The GMC trucks, at least from '60-'62, came with a Dana 44 rear end, and that was an optional rear for the Chevy trucks as well.
I've got a Dana under my '61 Suburban.
I'd have to go back through my notes, but I BELIEVE the GMCs were leaf sprung, while the Chevy was coil/trailing arms... but the HD version of the Chevy was available with leaf springs, and the HD version for GMC was heavy coils and trailing arms.
The Dana has a rear cover somewhat like the later 12-bolt... it's kind of Home Plate shaped, but has 10 bolts.
The Dana 44 is the most common rear end in the US, used back in the '50s on Hudsons and Studebakers, and up through the present in Jeeps, Ford Exlorers, and a version of it is even used on the Viper and the last version of the Corvette (with the trans up front behind the engine). Parts and rebuild kits are readily available, brand new OEM gears from Dana are still available (better quality than aftermarket gear sets), and you can get a brand new Posi unit from a Jeep guy who is swapping his 3-series gears for a 4-series. (Got mine for $100).
