emergency brake cable
So as I was inspecting my rear brakes 87 GMC SWB, I checked my emergency brake and on the driver side, it is not engaging. After furthur inspection, when the emer. brake pedal is depressed, the actual cable & housing move vs. just the inner cable. I am curious to see a pic of if the cable is supposed to be mounted to the frame to prevent it from actually moving. Does anyone have any suggestions.

Re: emergency brake cable
The cable shouldn't mount to the frame, just the end to the drum and the other end thru the metal bracket that attaches both right and left cables. You may just have a seized cable, I replaced my drivers side cable not too long ago. $12 for a new one from the Zone

Re: emergency brake cable
Thx Malibu. I was thinking a possible seized cable, was just curious. I see where the passenger side cable passes thru the mounting bracket, it is actually held in place on the bracket,, so that only the inner cable slides. . The driver side just goes thru its hols with no attachment. This is where it moves when the pedal is depressed. I am thinking it also should be attached to the bracket w/ similar hardware as passenger, this way the entire cable doesn't move. Thoughts?

Re: emergency brake cable
The reality is if it pulling the cable even with the protective sleeve it should still work. if it is not pulling the cable due to a frozen sleeve then it wont work.

Re: emergency brake cable
The drivers side cable passes thru the bracket and the sleeve should snap into the bracket, then the cable attaches to the main cable. So the main cable pulls on the bracket and engages pull cables.
I had to replace mine because the cable seized with the brake engaged, So the drivers side drum was stuck! Luckily I was pulling it into the garage when it happened. |
