Hot rod flatz? What am I doing wrong????

I just got in my gallon of speed blue paint. I am having a problem in getting it to come out flat. It comes out as a semi gloss in most places and others it is flat. I am mixing it 4:1:1. Does anybody know what I am doing wrong?

sounds like you are using to slow of a reducer or getting uneven coverage

you bought hot rod flatz thats your problem. You should have bought a base coat and then low gloss or satin clear. if you have your heart set on using you have to mix the crap out of it. if you have a shaker put the can in for about half an hour, im not kidding. This paint gets streaky when its not shaken well. Also make sure you paint your car in one session, because of the same reason. this thing settles quickly

see I thought the opposite, I figured it was too fast and it was flashing too quick, not allowing him to cover or keep a wet edge.


Fwiw, I really would avoid single stage matte colors, at that rate you might as well just rattle can it.

I used the DupliColor Paint shop satin clear, which gets sprayed normally over a base coat like any other clear. The only differences are that you can't wet sand it since it will screw up the texture, and the DupliColor stuff is pre-mixed. This can be a little tricky if you have temp changes during your painting, since its only reduced one way.

I first had a quart that i did all the jamming and it went well. This gallon can has it coming out streaky and too shiny. I was thinking that it needed to be shaken better to get the right mixture. So you are saying to add more reducer to it?

I have had similar issues with hot rod flatz. I have found you have to mix the heck out of it...over and over again. Also the primer you use can build sheen in the paint (epoxy primer can do this). I have been painting my truck in bits and pieces and i have several different levels of sheen on the various parts. I am resolved that I will have to flat clear coat the truck after its assembled. Also the amount of paint will build sheen as well. one coat is much more flat than 3 coats.
