Bearing stuck on Axle - Honda ATV

Not the C10 - but its giving me a headache and the ATV forums aren't much help so far so Im giving it a try here

I have a 2005 Honda 4wheeler. I need to replace the axle bearings on the rear. The bearings are located inside the brake backing plate and I can not get them to slide off of the axle.

I'm sure these are the factory bearings, they are completely shot from mud / water and it looks like the inner ID of the bearing is siezed to the axle.

Any suggestions on working this thing loose?

To make matters worse, the backing plate is cast Aluminum, can only beat on it so much without worry of breaking it.

Here is an exploded parts diagram of what I am working with - 24 is the backing plate and the bearings.

Spray with some lube. Any way to heat up the bearing? Replacing it, so don't matter if it's ruined or not....

My Daddy always said, if you can beat it, heat it. Is there any way to heat it up with out causing damage?

Re: Bearing stuck on Axle - Honda ATV

Been spraying it with liquid wrench every time I walk by it. Going to mix up some ATF/Acetone tonight.

I tried heating it with a propane torch, It started smoking (prob from the liquid wrench) so I quit, it still didnt budge. Will try that again before adding the atf/acetone mix

Be careful with those flammable liquids and the torch please. Don't want to see an ATV go "poof"

Re: Bearing stuck on Axle - Honda ATV

I'm trying to remember if I had to heat them up on my 700 Raptor. There is two per side on those....But not hurting anything burning off the liquid wrench or whatever you used, have to expect that to happen. Most likely it won't move just with the liquid stuff, either have to heat it or take it somewhere to get pressed off.

Re: Bearing stuck on Axle - Honda ATV

Thats the problem, this has to come off before the Axle can slide out the opposite side.

I've had a gear puller in it, its still not budging. Tried fitting a pipe over the axle and then drive the bearing the opposite direction to loosen it up, no change.

Going to let the flammables dry out and try the torch again tomorrow. If it doesnt come then, I guess Ill slap it back together and take it in to the shop

Re: Bearing stuck on Axle - Honda ATV

I think I had to tap the end of the axle to get mine out. It looks to be similar to yours. Put the axle nut on the end, then hit it with a hammer and a block of wood so not to damage the threads. Heat up the bearings before, should help....

Re: Bearing stuck on Axle - Honda ATV

Yes,

19 (both of them) is stuck inside 24 - and stuck to the axle. And yes - i verified the axle slides out of the swing arm to the left - bearing slides off to the axle to the right.

b454rat - Thats is a good idea, to drive the axle "in" instead of driving the bearing "out" Will at least be easier to get force on it.

I picked up a tank for the torch last night, will try heating it and then driving it off tonight.

Re: Bearing stuck on Axle - Honda ATV

I might have to sit and re-think that idea though - need to see what all will have to be disassembled to allow the axle to slide out the other side. At the very least I think I'll have to pull the driveshaft / center chunk.

Re: Bearing stuck on Axle - Honda ATV

Thanks for the recommendation Old Blue - I'll add his info to my file, especially if he has used parts.

I figured out how to slide the axle out from the side I was having trouble with rather than the opposite side like the Service manual says to do. Meant taking a little more apart than what I had planned, but the bearing came right of the axle once i could get to it from behind. The outer race was still stuck in the backing palte once i popped it out though. That took a little bit of work to get out, but it came. Everything is apart and I didnt break anything. Now just waiting on the replacement parts to come in.
