high mileage engines
At what point do ya'll consider an engine to be high mileage, 100,000? More? Less? What do you do special or different if anything maintenance wise to an engine with a bunch of miles. I've put about 90,000 on the 350 in my 67 since I built it, my grandpaw would drop in a new motor every 100,000 even if it was still running good. He has right at 500,000 on his 71 and its on its fourth engine. Mine is fast approaching 100 grand but it still runs fine so I have no plans of putting in a new motor just curious if there are any rips and tricks to get the most out of an engine.

If I built it, high mileage doesn't bother me. My tip is regular Maintenance, fix anything that presents. I always run the same oil and never veer from it. When the oil pressure drops a considerable amount, showing me bearing wear, then I rebuild/replace. Or something catastrophic. That's my thoughts on high mileage and engine replacement.

If maintained properly a 100k mile motor is just fine. If it starts burning a little oil up the weight.

Depends on the motor.
I've got a 4.8 that has 230k on the clock and has been beat on every day of it's life. In fact to see 6 grand atleast once a week isn't really uncommon. Especially during the summer months. I've also got a 6.0 with 240k on the clock and still running strong. |

100k is nothing if the engine was maintained properly. That said, straight 6 tend to last longer than v-8 due to the nature of their design.

To me, its all about maintenance. If its had regular oil changes with the proper oil it should be good.
Newer engines have roller cams and fuel injection, therefore should go MUCH longer. The older engines with a flat tappet cam and not the right additives in the oil can run into problems after awhile. Also, with a carb you can have issues with "washing" the walls with fuel from being WAY to rich. But, like I said keep up maintenance and it should still last a long time. |
