Air cleaner?
I picked up a 1982 shortbed with a 292 straight 6 in it. It doesent have an air cleaner on it. I cant find one to fit it either. It has a square flang on the carb. The intake is made into the head. Thanks in advance. Later jw.

Re: Air cleaner?
I believe the carb you have is a Rochester 2SE Varajet and you'll probably have to do some junkyard hunting to find an air cleaner that fits.
I think that carb was first used sometime around 1978 or 79 and continued up into the 80's. I've seen them on trucks with 250 inline sixes as well. GM cars with 2.5L 4-cyl and 2.8L V6's used those Varajet carbs for a while too (before they went to fuel injection). I don't know if the whole air cleaner assembly off one of those engines would work on your 292, but you might be able to use one as a donor for the unique rectangular flange ... cut that portion off and weld it onto some other air cleaner to make one that fits. |

Re: Air cleaner?
Are you sure its a 292 and not a 250? The reason I ask is that something doesn't quite add up, and it will affect what parts you need to ask for:
In 1982 you could not get a 6 foot bed on anything but a 1/2 ton truck. This makes it sound like your truck is a 1/2 ton. However, at the same time in 1982 you could not get a 292 in a half ton truck, only started being one in the 3/4 ton weight ratings but those weren't made with shortbeds. The 4.1L 250 ci inline 6 WAS an option in the half ton trucks. It is possible that a previous owner blew up the 250 somehow and swapped in a 292 from a different year/model as a replacement. If you look on the passanger side of the block, looking forward from the starter mounting area and below the inspection covers on the side there should be a large casting number in letters probably about 1/2" tall. Can you look up those numbers and check them online or post them here? From what you describe it sounds like it should be a 4.1 truck, but, we should make sure before trying to steer you towards parts |

Re: Air cleaner?
Square top carb = varijet = 250 with integral head. 79 up Nova and C10's. Unless someone swapped heads which would almost be a crime.
Quick check - meassure the height of the lifter covers on the passenger side of the block. 4 1/2 = 194/230/250, 6" = 292

Re: Air cleaner?
84Jimmy's is an offset van air cleaner for a Monojet.
The OP needs one from a 2bbl, like the one in 'the 10's listing
