Re: Lets see those stock trucks and sleepers

My 79 appears completely stock, with a GM 502 under hood. Guess you could say it's a sleeper but I never really think of it as something I care to go fast in. It has raised some eyebrows though.

Re: Lets see those stock trucks and sleepers

Not a square, but here's a sleeper. One of my favorites of all time.

The 50's style truck in this one is great too, but not nearly as fast as the '69.

I thought LSx trucks were supposed to be the hottest things going right now!

I think the LS swap is popular for everything, but since you asked for trucks, here's my 72 blazer with a 6.0. I drive it everyday. Guess you could say it's a sleeper, it does seem to run pretty well, but no track times yet. It's more of a cruiser and the family SUV for me.

And to be fare to squares, here's a shot of the original 454 I pulled from my 79 1 ton pickup vs the new 502 GM crate going in

Here it is nestled down into the truck ready to go. The old 454 with a performer cam and intake, headers, ran 14.70 so it was decent for an old 5500 lbs. pickup truck. No track times on the 502 yet but I suspect a bit quicker.

Sleepers?? I don't know, they are just trucks to me. Difficult (and expensive) to make a heavy brick go fast. Impressive when they do though....

I think the majority missed the title to this thread or maybe I did. Are you looking for stock looking trucks that are sleepers? IE fast but dont look it?

That's what I would consider a sleeper,,,yes. Although both of mine look stock, I don't really consider them fast enough to be "sleepers" per say.

It would have to be a truck that at least dips into the 11's to get my attention.

FJ, what is that air cleaner from? Custom job? Can I see a pic of where you entered the radiator support on the drivers side?

Ha, not many people catch that and realize it's not stock.

It's the original air cleaner with the passenger side snorkel and air intake hose. What I did was grab another identical BBC air cleaner (larger mouth opening than sbc, getting harder to find now) and remove that snorkel by drilling the spot welds. Cut a new hole in my air cleaner identical to the other side and spot welded the snorkel to mine and made a dual setup. Then I stopped at GM and bought another intake duct (still available at that time).

At that same junk yard I grabbed the core support piece that bolts in (for the snorkel to snap onto), I simply installed that on the driver side of my core support. The hole and patterns are there on both sides of the core support (thanks GM ) so it's easy to adapt the intake hose to the driver side. Guess they duplicate both sides since air cleaners didn't always enter the passenger side depending on engine option I suppose.

I then removed all the baffling inside my air cleaner (baffle in front of snorkle and baffle surrounding the carb opening) for free flowing unrestricted cold outside air. Looks stock Lots of little tricks in this truck that go unnoticed.

I can take more pics tomorrow if there is something in particular you want to see? You want to see the driver side core support entrance?

Here's an overview shot that I already had....I did this carefully so I didn't have to paint the air cleaner. Those are the original decals on the air cleaner and I doubt they are reproduced anywhere, so I didn't want to go down that road. Luckily the added snorkel has about the same weathered/aged look as the rest of the air cleaner so it looks original, lol. Actually looks a little dusty in this shot,,good ole Arizona desert air I guess.
