Help with traditional look wheel/ tire size...

I am gonna buy some wheels here soon from Rally America but i need to decide on tires so i can order the right width.
I plan to run oe style wheels 15x? powdercoated black. Eventually with trim rings, spyder rings, cones, and bullet lug nuts. Just like the ones in the first pic.

I want to run wide whites but keep going back and forth on width.

Originally was going to run 6.70-15 biased pie crust firestones. But then i decided to go ifs and 350 swap so now im thinking radials. If i go radials i think i will just save up and go with a set of diamondbacks.

What size would you all suggest? Should i run wider in the rear?
205/70/15 up front seems like a good choice, should i run a 225 or 235 in the rear? Stay with the same size all around so i can rotate? Help me decide! They will be going on my truck running the shot maroon paint with some the new parts painted and scuffed to match.

Re: Help with traditional look wheel/ tire size...

I would run 205/70/15's all the way around. I really dont think a fatter rear tire suits a "cruiser" style truck. I think tall skinnys look more appropriate.
I have 275/50/15's on the rear of my 59 and 255/50/15's on the front. Idont really care for the look. When I get around to putting wheels and tires on it ill go tall skinnys all the way around.

Re: Help with traditional look wheel/ tire size...

I can't find your thread over at the hamb. Can you point mr in the right direction??
I've done a lot of reading on this and the most comparable size is 205/75 according to everything I've seen. That or 215/70. My truck has 215/75 from PO. If you look at the tire specs for the three, the differences aren't that much.

I dont wanna ruffle anyfeathers here so i wont link to my hamb build thread. Its basically the same as mine here though....

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=442712

Yes i did post this same question over there in the Ad forum. Suggestions there were to run a little wider 225/75 front and back.

This truck is 225 front 235 back and his suggestion was 225 front and rear. He is running reversed wheels which i dont want to run.... Beatiful truck though!

Not a criticism, but did anyone else notice that non-chevy trim on the side of the hood on the blue AD? It looks right at home there.

Re: Help with traditional look wheel/ tire size...

I've got some 215-75-15 rollers for the 48 off my wife's 76 Seville that met an untimely death a few years ago. I'm not sure what the final tire size will be but it won't be real wide this time around.

Re: Help with traditional look wheel/ tire size...

I defy you to come up with some definition of "traditional" that doesnt start WW3. Haha!

My first tradition involves driving my cars (and truck) so Im happy enough with whitewall radials, Jaguar suspension, a 350 and an auto. And I think big & littles are traditional too, so I have 195/65/15s on the front and 235/75/15s on the rear on 15*6 and 15*8 chrome rims.

My second tradition is that the car (truck) must sit right as "stance is everything" tho now I have to accommodate our city roads as they got badly damaged in the earthquakes so its not so easy to fit both of the first two traditions together anymore.

My other tradition involves shiny paint, so altho I got my truck with satin black paint, sometime in the coming year that too will change. That blue truck looks great to me.

My truck is registered as a 48, and it has a new 54 grill on it. I suspect its a 49-53 cab but really have no idea.

That's a nice tire size combo for big & littles on a traditional Truck with a great stance Todd.

Re: Help with traditional look wheel/ tire size...

Hi PurdueSD, heres a couple of pikkys of the truck just after we got it, and a couple after the rolled rear pan was fitted.. I took the wheels & tyres off another long term project & the fitted very nicely under the guards with the stock width Jag rear end (xj6 series 2 around 1975 or so).

If the rear end was a bit narrower, then I could have fitted up my 15*10 chromies and wider whitewalls, but 15*8 is as wide as I can go with the stock width Jag.

The rims came from Summit Racing & from memory are US Wheel 52 Series chromies with the stock offset, so nothing hard to get and about US$83 each.

The gas tank in the final pikky didnt stay there for very long. Was a great idea in theory, but we couldnt hide it away well enough. Tyres are Goodyears as I couldnt get any BFGs at the time. They are pretty ugly but okay hidden under the guards.

Re: Help with traditional look wheel/ tire size...

Thanks for posting those shots todd and thanks to everyone else. Im really struggling with this decision for some reason. Right now im thinking 225/75 on all four on 7 inch wheels. Keep going back and forth though. I really like the 6.70 bias look just not sure im willing to sacrafice handling that much. Skinny radials dont have the same classic look.

Re: Help with traditional look wheel/ tire size...

I guess the Goodyear wide whites are traditional but they are really ugly compared to the BFG.

The whitewall is on a thick ridge of rubber - maybe 1/4 inch wide and the tread is pretty thin compared to the tyre width. So I guess if you want a tyre that fills the guard well, without a big footprint on the road, then they would be great.

The other issue with the Goodyears, it that the circumference by the rim have a bunch of Xs on the whitewall and they gather dirt & dust so when you get anywhere, they tend to look dirty. I dont like that.

I bought the tyres via a phone call from here in New Zealand, and the tyre shop in California said a lot of folk didnt like the Xs on the whitewall. I hadnt seen them, and they had no BFGs in stock so I ordered them as the container was leaving a few days later and I ran out of choices.

I will get BFG wide whites next time round.
